Britney Spears is being defended by Doja Cat, as the R&B singer has hit back at critics for comparing a recent beauty overhaul to Spears’ 2007 look.

Having shaved her head and eyebrows and posted a picture of her new look on Instagram last year, Doja Cat received a litany of comments that said her new look was similar to when Spears infamously shaved her head in 2007. Some fans even asked if she was having a hard time herself.

In an interview with Variety, Doja Cat explained that it was disturbing to hear the disrespectful comparisons, saying that it minimized the mental and emotional struggle Spears was going through at the time.

“It’s so incredibly disrespectful for people to be minimizing what Britney went through and make a joke out of something that was very serious and a big deal in her life,” the R&B singer said. “Every time I see a comment like that, I can’t compute what’s happening, other than it’s just an awful thing.”

Why did Doja Cat shave her head?

When asked why she changed her look so dramatically, Doja Cat responded that she simply needed a change.

“When I shaved my eyebrows off and I shaved my head, I remember thinking, ‘Get this shit off of me,’ because I needed to change something,” the singer said.

Doja Cat on rising to fame

Doja Cat confessed that like Britney, she too has faced her struggles as a young singer rising to fame, and has to constantly get her attitude back into check. She still has old garage-band tracks and TikTok originals that she continues to feel embarrassed by, but her greatest challenge is her critics.

“Now I’m being flooded with people who have these preconceived [...] notions about me, and they come in and try to troll. Which I’m very good at handling,” the singer said. “A lot of people think I’m not good at handling trolls because I respond to them. But that’s the art of it.”

‘Woman’ nominated for Record of the Year

Doja Cat’s album ‘Woman’, which has been called heavily feminist, is nominated for a 2023 Grammy Award for Record of the Year. The singer has something else to say about it.

“It’s not like a big feminist anthem — absolutely not,” Doja Cat said. “I didn’t want to make a great statement, but if somebody felt empowered by it, that’s fantastic, and that’s what I want, though it’s not what I seek.”
