Doja Cat gives an update on her fourth album: “It’s basically done”

Doja Cat seems prepared to give her fans new music, after teasing what the tracklist could look like and giving a hint of her vision for the all-rap album.

The new album, tentatively titled ‘Hellmouth’, is set to be released sometime this year, and now the ‘You Right’ singer has revealed that the album is “basically done”.

In a recent Interview Magazine chat, Doja gave an update on the album, after revealing a potential tracklist for the album in a tweet at the beginning of the month.

“I am working on my album right now. I don’t have an album title, we’re working on that,” she said of the album title, which currently has the working title of ‘Hellmouth’.

“It’s done. It’s basically done. I think I have just a few sessions here. I have two or three that I’m going to be going in and adding some stuff or taking things out. It really is basically finished.

“And so I’m really excited about that because it’s something very different than what I’ve been doing forever,” she added.

When asked for a release date for the album, all Doja said was “soon”.

What is the sound of the new album?

For the past two years, since the release of ‘Planet Her’ in 2021, Doja has hinted that she wants a take a different direction with her new album, moving away from the catchy pop sounds that have earned her multiple awards, for songs such as ‘Say So’ with Nicki Minaj, ‘Kiss Me More’ with SZA, ‘You Right’ with The Weeknd, and ‘Streets’.

After a series of tweets where she gave fans the album’s working title of ‘Hellmouth’, she seems dedicated to moving away from her pop music past, saying “Pop isn’t exciting to me anymore. I don’t wanna make it.”

In older interviews, she said that she wants to explore, techno, and punk, and also contemplated releasing a double album that was half-pop and half-rap.

Ultimately, Doja seems set on exploring her early influences of rap and hip-hop. Her decision is also in reaction to those who doubt her rapping abilities, and she’s set on proving the naysayers wrong.

“I’ve rapped since the beginning, and I really couldn’t even sing that well, to begin with—I got a lot better,” she told Elle in 2022.
