Drew Barrymore has come out to defend Hugh Grant’s “awkward” Oscar red carpet interview in her talk show on Friday.

Barrymore said that anyone who thought Grant was being awkward or “grumpy” didn’t understand his character or sense of humor and defended his dry interview responses with Oscar’s red carpet host Ashley Graham.

Barrymore reiterates that Grant is a kind person

Barrymore had only kind words to say about the “veteran of the Oscars” as Graham referred to the actor, and fought back against accusations that Grant is a “curmudgeon”.

“No, that is Hugh Grant. You think you’re getting this charming movie star and what you really get is grumpy Hugh, and then you fall in love with grumpy Hugh,” she said on her show.

Barrymore’s defense of Grant came after co-host Ross Matthews brought up Grant’s scathing review of Barrymore’s singing ability. Barrymore and Grant previously appeared in the 2007 musical-comedy, ‘Music and Lyrics’.

Grant’s words came in a recent interview with Wired where he answered a question about whether he was actually singing in the musical.

“Yes, well I do, but I’m auto-tuned beyond belief,” the actor explained.

“Drew Barrymore was in that film with me and I don’t think she’d mind me saying her singing is just horrendous. I’ve heard dogs bark better than she sings,” he joked.

But Grant said that despite both of them being auto-tuned, Barrymore sang better than he did because “she’s got heart and voice and rock ‘n’ roll.”

“When he says that, I’m telling you, he is being absolutely funny, he doesn’t mean one negative thing about it. The person that Ashley Graham met on that carpet is the real Hugh.”

He is a hilarious, good human being,” Barrymore added.

Barrymore did add that despite her being a fan of Grant now, it did take her a second to learn how to love him and appreciate his humor.

“It took me a second,” Barrymore said. “And then I was like, ‘Oh no, I love you.’”

Graham was taken aback by Grant’s Oscars interview

Grant’s interview on the red carpet at this year’s Oscars has been perceived as extremely awkward, with Grant giving Graham one-word responses and appearing like he would’ve rather been anywhere else.

When asked about the interview, Graham said:

“You know what? My mama told me to kill people with kindness,” she told TMZ while at LAX. “So there you go.”
