Ed Sheeran delivers impromptu performance atop a Volvo in New York

Something unexpected was added to the American express-sponsored “The Subtract Experience Pop-up” in Soho, New York City.

Ed Sheeran jumped on a Volvo in the middle of the street, among a sea of fans, and gave an acoustic performance of ‘Boat’, his new single.

Sheeran shared an Instagram Reel, which he captioned with: “Standing on a Volvo in New York outside the pop-up x.”

In the reel, Sheeran is carrying an acoustic guitar and climbing to the roof of the vehicle.

“Could I sing you one song before I go?” he asks before beginning the song.

He also posted: “Guys don’t panic we own the Volvo, it’s fine.”

The performance comes as a pleasant surprise after a New York jury ruled that Sheeran did not steal part of Marvin Gaye’s ‘Let’s Get It On’ for his 2014 hit ‘Thinking Out Loud’ to conclude the copyright infringement trial he’d been attending all week.

After he was found not liable, Sheeran stated that jury’s decision “will help to protect the creative process of songwriters here in the United States and around the world.”

“But, at the same time, I am unbelievably frustrated that baseless claims like this are allowed to go to court at all,” the four-time Grammy winner wrote in a statement.

“We have spent the last eight years talking about two songs with dramatically different lyrics, melodies and four chords which are also different and used by songwriters every day, all over the world.”

Sheeran encouraged the music community to “come together to bring back common sense.”

“These claims need to be stopped so that the creative process can carry on, and we can all just go back to making music,” he concluded.

“At the same time, we absolutely need trusted individuals, real experts who help support the process of protecting copyright. Thank you.”

He is scheduled to begin the North American leg of his ‘Mathematics Tour’ at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas on May 6.
