Understanding the controversy surrounding Isreal´s participation in Eurovision this year.
Despite not officially being a European nation, the Middle Eastern country has won Eurovision four times, most recently in 2018. However, there has long been plenty of friction surrounding their participation in the 2024 event, with their song entry rejected by contest organisers on two occasions for being “too political”.
Their first proposal, named “October Rain,” was barred by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), who considered that it had obvious political connotations, with the lyrics seemingly referring to an attack carried out by Hamas, the Palestinian political and military movement, in southern Israel last October.
After that track was turned down by the EBU, “Dance Forever” was then put forward as an alternate but was also turned down for similar reasons.
In order for Israel not to be disqualified from the contest, president Isaac Herzog intervened and pushed for “October Rain” to be reworked, with “Hurricane” using the same melody but with new lyrics and a new title. Read more.

News on the disqualification of the Dutch contestant provided
In the press release provided on the disqualification of the Dutch Eurovision contestant Joost Klein, the European Broadcasting Union said that his "behavior towards a team member" had been "deemed in breach of Contest rules."
He will not compete this evening, the EBU has told voters not to vote for Song 5, which would have been his position in the lineup, as those votes will not be counted.
"Swedish police have investigated a complaint made by a female member of the production crew after an incident following his performance in Thursday night’s Semi Final," reads the statement. However, the legal process has yet to begin in any substantive way, leading many to call into question the validity of the arguments made by the organization. This also comes after Klien was accused of asking Israel's contestant, Eden Golan, to defend why she had been allowed to participate in the event. The EBU has said that they do not want to make the competition political after Israel's participation was called into question, given the government's complete assault on the Gaza Strip, which has claimed the lives of at least 34,000 people, half of which are thought to be children and women.

How to watch Eurovision in the United States
Tonight's event will begin at 3 pm ET, live from Malmö, Sweden.
The most straightforward way to watch is to purchase a $6 NBC Peacock subscription and stream the event directly to your computer or television.
Held this week for the 68th occasion, the Eurovision Song Contest is an international music competition that involved just seven countries when it took place for the first time in 1956—just under seven decades on, no fewer than 37 nations entered the latest edition of the competition, which is traditionally staged by the previous year’s winning country. In 2023, Sweden’s Loreen claimed victory with her song “Tattoo”, so the southern Swedish city of Malmö is the venue for Eurovision 2024.
Run by the European Broadcasting Union, Eurovision was conceived as “a technical experiment in television broadcasting”, the event’s organisers say. “The live, simultaneous, transnational broadcast that Europe has now been watching for nearly 70 years was in the late 1950s a marvel.”
Saturday night sees the staging of the 2024 Eurovision Song Contest in the Swedish city of Malmo following Loreen’s win in the 2023 competition. One of the artists highly tipped to secure the 2024 victory is the Irish entry with Bambie Thug representing the Emerald Isle with the song ‘Doomsday Blue’.
Viewers worldwide are preparing to watch the final of Eurovision 2024 this Saturday, 11 May. Since the competition began in 1956, some countries have delivered winners more frequently than others. Here is a look at the countries that have snagged victories the greatest number of times.
Hello and welcome to AS USA's live feed on the 2024 Eurovision song competition final. I'm Maite, and I will be bringing you the latest from inside and outside the venue of one of the most controversial Eurovision finals in recent memory.
Joost Klein, the contestant from The Netherlands, has been disqualified from the competition after being accused of misconduct by event staff. The allegations stem from an incident where Klein allegedly asked the Israeli contestant to justify her participation in the competition. Klein had been a fan favorite in earlier rounds, and his elimination has sparked further outages at the event's sponsor, the European Broadcasting Union (EBU). The EBU has faced growing criticism from activists and advocates for free speech for banning participants from featuring the Palestinian flag or wearing a keffiyeh, which is a common symbol of Palestinian culture and resistance. Protestors from across Europe have descended on Sweden's capital to protest the event, including climate activists and Swedish national Greta Thunberg.
For those tuning in from the US, the event will begin at 3 p.m. ET. While the competition's fanbase is growing in the US, and many non-European countries compete each year, the US is not one of them.
Follow along with us for the latest as millions tune in to view this year's final.
