Comedy sci-fi film ‘Everything Everywhere All At Once’ sweeps the 2023 Independent Spirit Awards film slate. The film was directed by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Schienert and follows the journey of Evelyn Quan Wang (played by Michelle Yeoh) as she travels the multiverse.

‘Everything Everywhere All At Once’ won in the following major categories: Best Screenplay, Best Editing, Best Director, and Best Feature. Three of the film’s actors also won for their selected categories.

Michelle Yeoh won Best Lead Performance for her incredibly well-received portrayal of Evelyn Quan Wang. Ke Huy Kuan (Waymond Wang) won Best Supporting Performance, and Stephanie Hsu (Joy/Jobu Tupaki) won Best Breakthrough Performance.

Directors Daniel Kwan and Daniel Schienert thanked the film community for giving their screenplay a chance.

“Without our community, our families, and the independent film community, the script would’ve never become what it is,” said Kwan in his acceptance speech for Best Screenplay.

Schienert added, “Screenplays are hard to read sometimes and ours was especially scary to read, so thank you to everyone who believed in it.”

Michelle Yeoh tears up in acceptance speech at Independent Spirit Awards

Actress Michelle Yeoh got emotional during her acceptance speech after winning Best Lead Performance. She thanked her directors and dedicated her performance to all mothers everywhere.

“The Daniels, my boys, thank you for writing such an incredible script that gave us the opportunity to be here to be seen to be heard,” the actress stated.

She continued, “and I want to dedicate this to all our mothers. Without our mothers, none of us would be here. … Thank you to all of you for believing in us and giving us a seat at the table.”

‘Everything Everywhere All At Once’ makes A24 history

Upon its release, ‘Everything Everywhere All At Once’ broke records for entertainment company A24. The multiverse movie became A24′s highest-grossing film to date on June 9, 2022, and has now reached $103 million in global ticket sales.

This record beat out A24′s previous top grossing hit, the horror movie ‘Hereditary’ which grossed $80 million worldwide.
