Everything we know so far about Lily-Rose Depp’s upcoming role in The Weeknd’s Series ‘The Idol’
‘The Idol’ starring Lily-Rose Depp and The Weeknd is set to premiere on HBO later this summer
The creator of Emmy-Award-winning HBO series ‘Euphoria,’ Sam Levinson is back with another series, this time starring actress Lily-Rose Depp and singer The Weeknd. The series, ‘The Idol’ is set to premiere soon after the final season of ‘Succession’ concludes in June of this year.
The series is co-created with musician and singer The Weeknd, also known as Abel Tesfaye, along with Euphoria’s Sam Levinson and Reza Fahim. This isn’t the first time Sam Levinson has linked up with a musician in his TV work, rapper Drake served as an executive producer with Levinson for ‘Euphoria.’
The Plot
When first announced, the show was described to be about a young female pop star (played by Depp), who falls in love with an unruly enigmatic wonder of an L.A. nightclub, (played by Tesfaye) who also happens to be a covert cult leader.
Since its announcement, there have been some minor changes to the plot detail, with the club owner becoming a self-help guru instead. However, exact details won’t be confirmed until the premier of the show.
The miniseries will have six episodes, and Tesfaye describes the story’s romance as “the sleaziest love story.” The series has an official Instagram, where the teaser trailer for the show debuted in October.
The Cast
Besides Tesfaye and Depp, ‘The Idol’ has several other big-name celebrities featured in the series. Singer and now actor Troye Sivan will be involved in an unnamed role. Jennie Kim from the girl group ‘Blackpink’ will make her acting debut as ‘Angel.’
Rachel Anne Sennott, best known for her role in the 2020 film ‘Shiva Baby,’ will be making a casting appearance. Along with Hari Nef who is also set to star in Greta Gerwig’s upcoming film, ‘Barbie’.
Actors such as Suzanna Son, Moses Sumney, Jane Adams, Eli Roth, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Melanie Liburd, and Tyson Ritter are all set to have recurring roles in the series according to IMDb.
What’s been said so far
In a recent interview with i-D, Lily-Rose Depp gushes over her upcoming role in the series. “I’ve dreamt of roles like this for forever. I just don’t think that you could give an actress a greater gift than a role like this,” she explains.
She goes on to talk about her role as lead character Jocelyn, “This has been the most meaningful and important project that I’ve ever done, and the thing that I’m the proudest of. I don’t know where to begin.”
“Jocelyn is the most wonderfully complex character. She’s so fascinating. A mystery. After a year of living with that character, I’m still obsessed with her. I just want to keep digging deeper,” Depp concludes.
Depp also says she was inspired by pop stars Britney Spears and Beyoncé for her character and looked into several different artists and movie stars throughout history to study for her upcoming role.
