When you think of a man painting on TV with big hair and an infectiously positive attitude, it’s only natural to picture none other than Bob Ross. But no one can picture Bob Ross performing acts of sabotage.

That’s the point that the upcoming Bob Ross-inspired movie ‘Paint’ makes, with Owen Wilson playing Carl Nargle, the host of a TV show who gets upstaged by a younger painter, and the actions he takes when coming to terms with his declining popularity.

‘Paint’ trailer

The first official trailer for ‘Paint’ finds Wilson channeling his inner Bob Ross, as he guides viewers through the process of bringing a painting to life as host of Vermont’s number-one painting show, a post he’s had for nearly three decades.

After wrapping up an episode, Nargle encounters a younger painter named Ambrosia, played by Ciara Renée, who hosts her own painting show called ‘Paint With Ambrosia’.

Nargle reacts by saying “Goodnight everybody” before walking away, with Wendi McLendon-Covey (who plays Wendy) saying “I’ve never seen him that mad.”

Nargle then fosters the talent of another young painter as he confronts his declining fame. While the trailer reveals very little about the actual plot, it portrays Nargle as a tortured artist who comes to grips with how fame has affected his life.

What is the plot of ‘Paint’?

The official synopsis of ‘Paint’ is as follows:

“The film centers on Carl Nargle, who has hosted Vermont’s number-one painting show for nearly three decades.

While Carl’s signature whisper has long kept viewers from Pittsfield to St. Albans breathlessly hanging on his every stroke, the station eventually hires a younger, better painter who steals everything (and everyone) Carl loves.

Who’s in ‘Paint’?

Owen Wilson is joined by Michaela Watkins as Katherine, Wendi McLendon-Covey as Wendy, Ciara Renée as Ambrosia Long, Nargle’s nemesis, Lusia Strus as Beverly, Stephen Root as Tony, and Lucy Freyer as Jenna.

When is ‘Paint’ coming out in theaters?

‘Paint’ will be released in theaters on Friday, April 7, 2023. The movie is also set to stream exclusively on AMC+ sometime in 2023.
