Gerard Piqué and Clara Chía are about to take the step the former Barcelona defender never did with Shakira. As exclusively revealed by Look, the entertainment arm of Spanish digital newspaper Okdiario, the couple are set to get married a little over a year after first getting together.

Why did Gerard Piqué and Shakira never get married?

Of course, Piqué and ex Shakira, whose split was made official a year ago, never tied the knot. According to the Colombian singer, she had always been reluctant to do so as she wanted the former soccer star to still see her as his girlfriend rather than wife, which she thought would keep him ‘on alert’.

Now, various sources close to Piqué and Chía appear to have spilled the beans and have revealed details of how the couple plan to tell their family and loved ones the news, as well as their plans to make sure they’re ready for the big day.

Wedding rumours

Rumours that wedding bells had started to ring began circulating a few weeks ago when the pair were spotted in the well-known Rabat jewellery store on Paseo de Gracia in Barcelona. One fellow shopper is alleged to have overheard Piqué say that an engagement ring was “already being sorted out” in a conversation with a shop assistant.

When will Piqué and Chía announce their engagement?

It has also been revealed when the couple will officially announce their engagement. According to Look, Piqué's plan is to somewhat step on the toes of brother Marc and announce his upcoming marriage to Chía at Marc’s wedding to María, his long-time girlfriend.

Two people who won’t be attending Marc and María’s big day, however, are the former Barça centre-back’s children, Milan and Sasha. Their uncle’s wedding is due to take place on Saturday 24 June, five days after they are set to return to Miami to be with their mother. Piqué and Shakira had reached an agreement to allow their children to stay in Barcelona until 19 June, with the Spaniard expected to ‘return the favour’ further down the line.
