First reactions to ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ are in
Early reaction is in for ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’, which hits theaters on April 5.

‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ is set to hit theaters across the United States on April 5.
However, with the movie having premiered in Los Angeles on April 1, there is already plenty of reaction to the film making its way around social media.
What’s the verdict on ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’?
The movie departs from the traditional Super Mario structure, which usually sees Mario (Chris Pratt), and sometimes Luigi (Charlie Day), rescue Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy) from Bowser (Jack Black).
Instead, the film will see the entire group involved in an adventure, with Donkey Kong (Seth Rogen) and Toad (Keegan-Michael Key) part of the journey.
Plenty of critics have already seen what the journey around the Mushroom Kingdom has to offer, and the response has been positive.
“The Super Mario Bros. Movie was awesome. Teared up from hype more than once,” wrote Tim Gettys, co-founder of Kinda Funny.
“The music is the star of the show. Nintendo fans are gonna be obsessed. I’m not sure ANY movie in history has ever had THIS MANY easter eggs. AND GOOD ONES!”

Erik Davis also liked the film, saying: “Wahoo! #TheSuperMarioBrosMovie is the ultimate love letter to every era of Mario. Loved the humor & especially Jack Black’s Bowser. I felt the same way watching the movie as I do playing the games. It’s just joyful. Also, stay for the credits!

is NOT great. That being said it’s PERFECT. I haven’t felt like this for an animated movie since THE 2014 LEGO MOVIE . Stunning animation, and music by Brian Tyler. It’s gonna be BIG. Give me the Cinematic Universe! 10/10 pic.twitter.com/D6cqjLBOHJ
Tessa Smith of Mama’s Geeky praised the song choices and the many Easter Eggs found in the film, though she noted Luigi takes a bit of a back seat.
#SuperMarioBrosMovie is a love letter to the game & lore of everyone's favorite plumber brothers! Easter Eggs galore! Utilizes sound & score perfectly! Peach is bada*s! The voice is addressed. Jack Black sings! Fans will flip! Luigi is sidelined 😭 #SuperMarioMovie pic.twitter.com/vh9akvsI80

Some critics weren’t as positive
Although the film received a positive reaction from most critics, some weren’t as enamored.
Germain Lussier found the movie to be “overly goofy” with a “bare-bones plot”.
The #SuperMarioMovie: I really wanted to like it but I did not.

A few solid scenes capture the spirit of the game but mostly it's an overly goofy, bare-bones plot, filled w/ bad jokes & worse song choices.
It looks great but I was more bored & annoyed than entertained. pic.twitter.com/D3CnNvbaaN
Rendy Jones liked the film but noted that the film is made by Illumination Studios, which has also produced ‘Despicable Me’, ‘Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax’, ‘Minions’, ‘The Secret Life of Pets’, and ‘Sing’, and is known to go heavy on the kid jokes.
#SuperMarioBrosMovie’s embargo is up. The Mario worlds are brought to life with top-notch animation and energetic action that will delight kids and fans. Full of loving Easter eggs and cameos.

That said, it’s a Mario movie made by illumination and I’ll leave it at that. pic.twitter.com/95Sh1gjI6o
