Florence Pugh chops off her hair in ‘A Good Person’
The actress opted to cut her own hair in lieu of using a wig
Florence Pugh opted to take matters into her own hands in her latest role. During an emotional scene in the new film ‘A Good Person’ directed by Zach Braff, her character, Allison, dramatically cuts her hair as a reaction to a tragedy.
Pugh rehearsed the scene wearing a wig, but when the cameras came rolling, the actress took a pair of scissors to her own locks, haphazardly cutting her hair in real-time.
Pugh’s decision to cut her own hair
Crew members, especially Braff, were not excited about Pugh’s decision to cut her hair.
“I was like, ‘Zach, I think I should chop my hair off at the beginning of the movie.’ And he was like, ‘The beginning of the movie – cool. That’s not gonna work,” Pugh told Jimmy Fallon on a recent episode of ‘The Tonight Show.’
Pugh was met with concerns about how the rest of the film’s shooting would work out if she cut her hair at the beginning of shooting, Pugh said she simply told them, “you’ll figure it out.”
In an interview with USA Today, Pugh expressed how much she could relate to her character’s reaction to cutting her own hair.
“For me, whenever I was particularly low as a teenager, I would do lots of quick fixes,” she remembered.
“I would buy things like nail kits or scissors and go onto YouTube and find out how to do it. I was just looking in any direction but the thing that was making me sad.”
In the movie, Allison’s life changes completely after she was involved in a car accident that killed her fiancé's sister.
The scene became a poignant moment for Pugh to truly get into Allison’s head, finding the experience freeing.
“Everyone was really anxious that it was the only take we’d have, but I found it really liberating,” she said.
“If anything, it was like the final key to unlocking this character. It took vanity out the window.”
Pugh and Braff reunite at the movie’s red carpet premiere
Braff recently opened up about how he began writing ‘A Good Person’ for Pugh while they were dating. The couple has since broken up after three years together, but despite this, they continue to be friends, even posing together for photos at the movie’s premiere on Monday.
“We’re both really proud of the movie,” he began, “We both want everyone to see it, so we’re both promoting it and doing everything we can to get it out there.”
