Frank Ocean pulls out of Coachella, Blink 182 to headline in his place

After his performance during the opening weekend of Coachella was met with mixed reviews, Frank Ocean will not headline the festival this Sunday.

Following the performance, reports emerged that the singer suffered an ankle injury prior to his show, and it appears it’s significant enough that he won’t be at the second weekend of the festival.

Blink 182 will take Ocean’s place and headline Coachella on Sunday instead.

“Frank Ocean will not be performing at weekend 2 of Coachella,” a rep for Ocean said in a statement.

“After suffering an injury to his leg on festival grounds in the week leading up to weekend 1. Frank Ocean was unable to perform the intended show but was still intent on performing, and in 72 hours, the show was reworked out of necessity.

“On doctor’s advice, ARTIST is not able to perform weekend 2 due to two fractures and a sprain in his left leg.”

Ocean ended the statement with his own comments: “‘It was chaotic. There is some beauty in chaos. It isn’t what I intended to show but I did enjoy being out there and I’ll see you soon.’ — Frank Ocean.”

Ocean’s injury hampered his performance

Ocean’s performance was his first live show since 2017, but eager fans were left disappointed.

The show was delayed by an hour, and was later cut short after exceeding Coachella’s set curfew.

Fans at home were also disappointed when news emerged that his show would not be live-streamed on Coachella’s YouTube channel.

Ocean spent most of his set, largely remixes of 18 of his songs, seated on a dimly lit stage, with news later emerging that he suffered an ankle injury.

The injury also explains why Ocean opted to wear comfortable slippers for the performance.

Last-minute changes were made to the stage as well

It also resulted in an elaborate ice skating performance to be scrapped. An elevated ice rink, made to accommodate 100 hockey players, was melted down and removed, which caused the performance to be delayed.

TMZ reported that Ocean’s team had reached out to several hockey teams in the Los Angeles area back in March, with players from the Loyola Marymount University team selected.

However, when they arrived on Sunday, they were told their performance was no longer taking place, and that they would join Ocean on stage as backup dancers.
