From Shirley Temple to Hayley Mills: These are the winners of the Academy Juvenile Award

A total of 12 actors and actresses under the age of 18 have been awarded the miniature, specially designed statuette.

A total of 12 actors and actresses under the age of 18 have been awarded the miniature, specially designed statuette.
Update:

Believe it or not, there were no categories for children during the first few years of the Oscars. The Academy introduced the Juvenile Award, also known as the Juvenile Oscar, an honorary prize, for the seventh edition of the gala in 1935.

Shirley Temple, the first winner of the Juvenile Oscar

Little Shirley Temple was the first recipient of the miniature, specially designed statuette. She was just six years and 310 days old when she was awarded the Juvenile Award in recognition of her “outstanding contribution to motion pictures” during the previous 12 months.

Temple shot to fame in David Butler’s comedy drama Bright Eyes in which she performed her signature song, On the Good Ship Lollipop. It would be the only time the actress would be honored by the Academy although she did receive a life achievement award from the Screen Actors Guild in 2006 among other accolades.

Deanna Durbin and Mickey Rooney were the next to receive the honorary Oscar - both were teenagers when they were honored for “setting a high standard of ability and achievement” at the 11th awards in 1938.

Judy Garland became the fourth winner just a few months after the release of The Wizard of Oz, regarded as “America’s greatest and best-loved home-grown fairytale”. Garland was just 17 when she shot to fame playing Dorothy, who gets caught up in a tornado and swept away to the mythical Land of Oz.

Juvenile Oscar winners

  • 1934 Shirley Temple (6 years, 310 days)
  • 1938 Deanna Durbin (17 years, 81 days) of youth, and as juvenile players setting a high standard of ability and achievement.
  • 1938 Mickey Rooney (18 years, 153 days)
  • 1939 Judy Garland (17 years, 264 days
  • 1944 Margaret O'Brien (8 years, 59 days)
  • 1945 Peggy Ann Garner (14 years, 32 days)
  • 1946 Claude Jarman, Jr (12 years, 167 days)
  • 1948 Ivan Jandl (12 years, 59 days)
  • 1949 Bobby Driscoll (13 years, 20 days)
  • 1954 Jon Whiteley (10 years, 39 days) for his outstanding juvenile performance in The Little Kidnappers.
  • 1954 Vincent Winter (7 years, 91 days) for his outstanding juvenile performance in The Little Kidnappers.
  • 1960 Hayley Mills (14 years, 364 days) for her outstanding juvenile performance in Pollyanna

The last time the Academy Juvenile Award was given out was in 1960. British actress Hayley Mills was honored for her portrayal of Pollyanna, a 12-year-old orphan who is being looked after by a rich aunt in the Disney film of the same name. Mills was nominated for a BAFTA for Pollyanna but was overlooked by the Academy for her future projects including the classic Whistle Down the Wind.

Which Academy Juvenile Award winners have won an Oscar?

The only Academy Juvenile Award winner who went on to win an Oscar was Mickey Rooney, who received four nominations during his career and received an honorary award in 1983 “in recognition of his 60 years of versatility in a variety of memorable film performances”.

Judy Garland was nominated twice for A Star Is Born (1954) and Judgment at Nuremberg (1961)

    Update:

One of Hollywood’s most eligible bachelors Jon Hamm married Mad Men co-star Anna Osceola in Anderson Canyon, Big Sur back in June 2023. They walked up the aisle to Nancy Sinatra’s 1967 James Bond theme song, You Only Live Twice.

The couple got engaged in 2021 and had been dating since 2020. Hamm had previously been in a long-term relationship with Jennifer Westfeldt - their 18-year liaison was one of the longest and steadiest among Hollywood’s glitterati before it came full circle in 2015. “With great sadness, we have decided to separate, after 18 years of love and shared history,” they explained in a joint statement to People magazine in September 2015. “We will continue to be supportive of each other in every way possible moving forward.”

Hamm and Westfeldt were more or less the same age, and according to several sources, she was almost like a mother figure to him, so it came as a surprise to some observers when he was rumoured to have started dating a woman 17 years his junior. The actor is believed to have first met Anna Osceola while they were both filming Person to Person in Season 7 of Mad Men. Anna had a cameo role as a receptionist, Clementine, in the final episode.

    Whirlwind romance

Romance blossomed during the Coronavirus pandemic when they began dating. They were photographed walking Hamm’s dog Splash in the Los Feliz neighborhood of Los Angeles in late 2020. The couple were engaged in February 2023 and appeared together on the red carpet the following month at the 2023 Vanity Fair Oscar Party.

For the first couple of years, Jon and Anna tried to keep their relationship private and away from the limelight so what do we know about the new bride? Anna was born on April 8, 1988 in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Anna Osceola, from a large family

Her father, Fuad Phillip Alan Osceola, is fully qualified massage therapist with over 30 years of experience in his field while little is known about her mother Lisa. Curiously, the surname Osceola is of native American origin and relates to the Seminole Tribe of Florida. Anna has two elder sisters - Ariel and Alexandra and a brother Sam - who are now Jon’s new in-laws.

Like all of her siblings, Anna went into higher education after high school, graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Drama from NYU Tisch School of the Arts on Broadway, New York City.

    Early career and acting roles

She made her screen debut playing Charlie in spoof Not Another High School Show in 2007 although the pilot never aired and the follow-up series was subsequently scrapped. Minor walk-on parts followed in a number of films, series and TV movies and gradually some recurring roles. She played US soldier Abby Sherman in Rizzoli and Isles, Robin Wylie in the ABC family series Greek and Casey Logan, a fashion model who witnesses a member of the Russian mafia kill someone in USA Network drama, In Plain Sight.

    Related stories

She made separate appearances in Law & Order, first as Jamie Spears in the season 18 episode Rape Interrupted, then was brought back in 2017, cast as Noelle Terlesky, who listens to Erik Menendez’s grim confession that he and his brother had murdered their parents.

Anna starred as Larry alongside her new husband in the 2022 Miramax production, Confess, Fletch. It was reported that Hamm donated two thirds of his fee to help the producers stay within their budget.
