No, it’s not a neighborhood kid playing a prank, Ghostface really has been seen in various spots around the country. In light of ‘Scream VI’ release next Friday, the marketing team behind the movie has come up with a clever way of promoting the film.

Actors dressed as the villain Ghostface have been recorded staring directly into live feeds across the country in eerily empty locations. Some people have been so scared by the news they’ve even called 911.

Ghostface spotted in multiple cities

So far, the villain has been spotted in Sonoma, California, which is also the stand-in city for the franchise’s fictional town Woodsboro. They were also seen in New Orleans, St. Louis, Cripple Creek, Colorado, and in the middle of a blizzard in Arizona.

The official Ghostface Twitter account captioned the sightings with “I was just minding my business,” and “I’m watching you.”

Some people who encountered the masked actor even went so far as to dial 911, in fear that the actor was up to no good. The Sonoma Police Department posted a statement on Facebook saying they had received multiple calls about the masked individual.

“This individual has been contacted and was hired by a company through Paramount to promote the new SCREAM movie. Thank you for everyone’s concern, it’s been addressed,” the post read.

The video was captured by a Visit Sonoma webcam. The hired Ghostface reportedly stood still at the spot for roughly an hour, a Visit Sonoma representative told the San Francisco Chronicle.

Also in anticipation of the movie, Paramount has set up a website where fans can input their names and phone numbers to receive a call from Ghostface, addressing them directly in a personalized message like those in the ‘Scream’ movies.

Not the first time Paramount has used interactive marketing

To promote ‘Smile’ a supernatural psychological horror movie released last September, Paramount also used actors to promote the movie in real life.

The marketing tactic went viral when the studio’s marketing team bought a number of seats during a baseball game behind home plate during an Oakland A’s and New York Mets game.

There, different actors were spotted smiling maniacally, wearing neon-colored shirts that said “smile” on them.

When to watch ‘Scream VI’

‘Scream VI’ will be released in theaters on Friday, March 10.
