Good news for ‘Star Wars’ fans: The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art now has an opening date
Filmmaker George Lucas and his wife, the businesswoman Mellody Hobson, are to open a new museum in L.A. next year.
A $1 billion museum founded by George Lucas and his wife, the businesswoman Mellody Hobson, is set to open its doors in Los Angeles late next year.
The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art announced in a statement this week that it is to begin welcoming visitors on September 22, 2026.
“The power of visual storytelling”
Located in Exposition Park, in south L.A., the Lucas Museum is to house over 40,000 pieces of art from Lucas and Hobson’s collection.
According to the museum, this collection includes pieces by figures such as Norman Rockwell and Frida Kahlo, as well as renowned comic artists, and major photographers including Henri Cartier-Bresson.
“The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art celebrates the power of visual storytelling,” the museum’s website says, explaining that the facility will explore “how images move us and shape our collective memory”.
The museum adds: “George Lucas and Mellody Hobson share a conviction that illustrated stories connect people across cultures and generations.
“Their decades of collecting span iconic American painting and popular illustration, comics, and cinematic art.”
“Could never sell my art”
Lucas, best known as the creator of the Star Wars space-opera film franchise, said: “I could never sell my art. It just is not what I think art is.
“I think it’s more about an emotional connection with the work, not how much it cost.”
Pieces from Lucas’s career
The Lucas Museum will also feature “models, props, concept art, and costumes” from Lucas’s career as a filmmaker, this week’s statement said.
Created by the architect Ma Yansong, the museum’s 300,000-square-foot, futuristic building has been designed in the form of a giant spaceship.
Built on an 11-acre campus, the Lucas Museum also includes “two theaters, a library, restaurant, café, retail store, and community spaces”, the statement added.
