Grimes reveals she’s changed her daughter’s name to “?”
The artist says she has unofficially changed her 15-month daughter’s name
Canadian artist Grimes recently posted some cute pictures wearing matching red onesies with her daughter on Twitter, captioned “Y & C”, and explained in the comments that her daughter is now referred to as “Y” or “?”.
Grimes, born Claire Boucher in Vancouver, Canada, gave birth to her daughter Exa Dark Sideræl Musk via surrogate with billionaire Elon Musk in December 2021. It is her second child with Musk following the birth of their son X Æ A-Xii in 2020.
“Y”, “Why?” or “?”
In the photo, both Grimes and her daughter are seen sporting blonde hair with highlighter-green tips and matching red onesies. Fans noticed that Grimes is wearing a red suit reminiscent of Uma Thurman’s yellow suit from the movie ‘Kill Bill’.
“Kill Bill: Vol. 3 looking good” a user commented on the selfie.
In the comments, she explained her daughter’s name and the philosophical reasoning behind it.
“She’s Y now, or “Why?” or just “?” (But the government won’t recognize that). curiosity, the eternal question, .. and such.”
Many users commented about Grimes and Musk’s insistence on naming their children unusual names.
“Can you just give your kid a normal name instead of a utterly pretentious one that systematically will get the kid bullied in school?” said one user, with others echoing the same sentiment.
“Tell you’re a pretentious, narcissist WITHOUT telling me you’re a pretentious narcissist,” another user said.
The meaning behind her children’s names
Grimes’ son, X Æ A-Xii, now almost two years old, had his name changed after his original name “X Æ A-12″ violated California naming laws. According to TMZ at the time, the child’s first name is X with the middle name Æ A-Xii on his birth certificate. He is also Elon Musk’s seventh child.
Grimes explained the meaning of her son’s name in a tweet shortly after he was born.
In a Vanity Fair interview, Grimes explained that her daughter’s name, Exa Dark Sideræl Musk, is a reference to the supercomputing term “exaFLOPS” referring to “the ability to perform 1 quintillion floating-point operations per second”.
Dark refers to “the unknown. People fear it but truly it’s the absence of photons. Dark matter is the beautiful mystery of our universe”, and Sideræl is “the true time of the universe, star time, deep space time, not our relative earth time”, as well as a reference to Galadriel, her favorite ‘Lord of the Rings’ character.
