Hollywood is still in mourning following the death of Gene Hackman at the age of 95. The legendary actor was found dead at his home in February 2025 in Santa Fe, New Mexico, along with wife Betsy Arakawa and their dog.

Hackman’s passing comes just days before the latest celebration of the Academy Awards, a ceremony he was a regular fixture at during his heyday.

Over a 25-year period, the California-born start received five Oscars nominations, winning on two occasions.
“Bonnie and Clyde”
In 1968, he was up for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in “Bonnie and Clyde,” in which he portrayed Buck Barrow, the older brother of Clyde Barrow, the leader of the Barrow Gang and the film’s male lead. Hackman lost out to George Kennedy (“Cool Hand Luke”).
“I Never Sang for My Father”
He was back in the same category three years later for playing college professor Gene Harrison in “I Never Sang for My Father,” but was pipped on that occasion by John Mills (“Ryan’s Daughter”).
“French Connection”
The following year, however, Hackman won his first Academy Award in the Best Actor category after starring as Detective Jimmy “Popeye” Doyle (based on real-life New York detective Eddie Egan) in “French Connection”.
“Mississippi Burning”
Hackman was also nominated for Best Actor in 1989 for his performance as FBI Agent Rupert Anderson in “Mississippi Burning”. The award, though, went to Dustin Hoffman (“Rain Man”).
“Unforgiven”
The actor then won his second and final Oscar in 1993, in the Best Supporting Actor category. That came for his portrayal of Sheriff “Little” Bill Daggett in “Unforgiven,” starring and directed by Clint Eastwood.
Hackman’s other career highlights include three Golden Globes, including two for Best Actor, and two BAFTAs.
