The ‘X-Men’ actor foresees that Australia will break from the Royal Family in the future.

Hugh Jackman believes that it’s only a matter of time until his home country Australia abandons the monarchy and establishes a republic instead.

The 54-year-old, who has parents of British birth and grew up watching royal celebrations such as the wedding of Prince Charles and Diana in 1981, told the BBC that in his estimation Australia will not be engaging with the Royal Family in the coming years.

The Monarch has no future in Australia?

In an interview with BBC news, Jackman revealed that though he has no negative feelings toward the members of the family personally, having met the late Queen Elizabeth II and King Charles II several times, the actor does not see a future between the two countries. Instead, he commended the Royal Family for their service thus far and wishes them the best.

I think Australia will become a republic at some point,” he said. “It feels natural. It feels like something that is, I would guess, is inevitable, and I would guess is part of the natural evolution of a country.

“I’ve met the Queen on several occasions, the Queen Mother and Prince Charles,” Jackman continued. “I see and feel a real genuine desire to be of service to the public.”

“And I appreciate that and I admire it, and I do wish them the best.”

Watching the royals

In the interview, Jackman recalled that he would watch royal ceremonies on television growing up, such as Prince Charles and Diana’s wedding, as his father insisted the whole family drop everything and watch the royals.

My father made us stop doing whatever we could in 1981 to watch the wedding of Lady Di and Prince Charles,” the actor said. “We had champagne... there was no bunting at our house but if my dad could have found it there would have been.”
