GOLDEN GLOBES
“I could get canceled for this” - Nikki Glaser threatens to follow Brady Roast at Golden Globes
The 82nd Golden Globe Awards will be held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel Sunday. Let’s meet the host, and chief roaster, Nikki Glaser.
Hollywood’s “Party of the Year” returns this weekend with the 82nd edition of the Golden Globe Awards - an event which recognizes excellence in international film and television during the past year.
This year’s gala will be the first to be presented solo by a female host - Tina Fey, Amy Poehler and Sandra Oh have all presented previous editions but as co-hosts. Glaser will be acting as MC on her own.
The 40-year-old stand-up comedian is well known for her no-holds-barred barbs and speaking her mind. She was asked along to take part in Tom Brady’s infamous celebrity roast special in May last year and didn’t hesitate to wade in with a few well aimed putdowns.
And the Cincy-born comic says that no topics will be off limits when she delivers her Golden Globes monologue at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on Sunday, promising quite a few “aggressive jokes”.
“It’s an exciting, yet challenging gig because it’s live, unpredictable and in front of Hollywood’s biggest stars‚" she told CBS Morning’s Luke Burbank, added that she can’t wait to roast a few A-listers and expose their fakeness, without overstepping the line.
On Sunday, there will be no hiding place for the likes of Hugh Grant, Demi Moore, Timothée Chalamet, Pamela Anderson, Angelina Jolie, Nicole Kidman - some of the nominees who Nikki could poke fun at.
The fine line between getting a laugh and offending someone
“Is it like, the Tom Brady Roast where Tom Brady had signed up - he can watch over the roast and know exactly what he’s getting into. So there is no line for me except the ones that we agreed upon - let’s not bring his kids into this and so forth. But there was never a moment in any roast I’ve done where I’ve said, ‘That’s too harsh for this person, who has sign up for it. It’s consent in my opinion," she explains.
“But the Golden Globes, these celebrities are there to win an award - they don’t want to be roasted. So it’s a delicate balance - giving the audience at home what they expect from me as a roaster. It’s a moment for a host to shine comically with some edge and it’s the only awards show that allows that”.
“Fawn and flame”
Glaser warns she will butter her victims up first before sticking the knife in. “That’s not insincere. I grew up worshiping celebrities and still do, but know I know it’s all BS and everyone’s really insecure. You see the fakeness. I’ve always known it’s there. It’s High School, everyone’s experienced some level of this in every part of there life and there’s a part of me that wants to call that out and also inject some truth into the evening. I don’t want to make anyone mad at me”.
Nikki’s New Year nip and tuck on the back burner
Glaser also candidly admitted that she has planned “to have some work done” on her physical appearance this month before the Golden Globes gig landed in her lap. She only found out she had been offered the host job a few weeks ago and had to rearrange her schedule.
“The thing was, for the first time in my life I had cleared a month from my schedule way ahead of time. So for January 2025, I was possibly going to have a brow lift or some kind of really invasive surgery that I’ve been looking into getting. I have no shame in telling people about those improvements but it would have been too distracting to be on stage with it so I just said I’ll take the month of January off.
“My agents asked if there was any way I could push this operation back to the second week of January... [My agents] asked if I wanted to host the Golden Globes and I was like, ‘Yes!’ It was a no brainer for me,” she confesses.
