The 27-year-old actress has been under fire for her role in the denim brand’s latest campaign, which critics have slammed as racist and even likened to “Nazi propaganda.”

Now, the revelation of her GOP voter registration in Monroe County, Florida—first reported by BuzzFeed News—is fueling even more debate about her political leanings.

Why is Sydney Sweeney being “canceled”?

The controversy began with American Eagle’s play on words between “genes” and “jeans,” touting that Sydney Sweeney has “great genes.”

In one ad—since pulled—Sweeney talks about how genes influence traits like “hair color, personality, and even eye color,” before ending with: “My jeans are blue.”

Billboards also featured the word “genes” crossed out and replaced with “jeans,” a creative choice critics said echoed racist pseudoscience about genetic superiority.

“This is basically the same coded language used throughout history to push racial hierarchies,” one TikTok user said in a viral post.

Following the backlash, American Eagle released a statement insisting the campaign was “always about jeans,” adding: “Cool jeans look good on everyone.”

Sydney Sweeney’s politics questioned... again

This isn’t the first time Sweeney has been accused of having conservative ties. In 2022, she faced online criticism after photos leaked from her mother’s 60th birthday party, where some guests wore red “Make Sixty Great Again” hats—a play on Donald Trump’s MAGA slogan—and “Blue Lives Matter” T-shirts.

At the time, Sweeney said it was “absolutely absurd” to turn her mother’s birthday into a political statement, clarifying that the guests wearing the MAGA-style gear were her mom’s friends, not her own family members.
