Jacob Elordi disobeyed his mother by working with this great director and is now nominated for an Oscar

Jacob Elordi, one of today’s most in-demand actors, may soon win his first Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for Frankenstein, directed by Guillermo del Toro. He recently admitted that he has never been prouder of disobeying his mother. Had he followed her advice, he might not be one of the current Academy Award nominees.

When Elordi was ten years old, he became fascinated by the cover art of one of del Toro’s most acclaimed films, Pan’s Labyrinth. However, his mother did not approve of his interest and made it very clear what he should never do.

“You must never work with this man”

The Australian actor, who has Spanish roots, shared the story during a screening of Frankenstein in London. He explained that whenever he went to the video store as a child, he would “raid the horror aisle” where he discovered a copy of Pan’s Labyrinth (2006).

Young Jacob immediately begged his mother to rent the intriguing film, whose imagery had completely captivated him. She agreed, but under one condition: “You must never work with this man.”

The reason remains unknown. However, the Mexican filmmaker, who was present at the screening, laughed and jokingly approved of the actor’s decision to ignore that advice, saying that sometimes “it’s good to disobey one’s mother.”

Ironically, Elordi only ended up working with del Toro due to unexpected circumstances. He was not part of the director’s original casting plans for Frankenstein. The actor initially chosen for the role left the project just a couple of months before filming began. Elordi had only four weeks to prepare, but he embraced the opportunity with enthusiasm.

“[I was] so excited and so sure when I read the screenplay for the first time, that I had no fear,” the actor said. “There’s no other filmmaker on this planet that could make a truly great ‘Frankenstein’ film.”

Frankenstein has since been widely praised by critics and audiences, becoming one of the most nominated films of the upcoming Oscars season. The film is currently available exclusively on Netflix.
