After taking the lead for Netflix’s number-one Series for several weeks after its premiere in November 2022, ‘Wednesday’ has become a project that Jenna Ortega has vowed to protect.

In some of her most recent interviews, she tells viewers how important it was to her to keep the integrity of her morbid and deadpan character, without losing her witty sense of humor or coming off too nasty.

Changing the script

Due to several contrasting notes from director and producer Tim Burton, the writing team, and the demands of the audience who know and love Wednesday Addams, Ortega took matters into her own hands, often changing the script more than once without informing the team.

“There were times on that set where I even became almost unprofessional in a sense where I just started changing lines,” Ortega shared on a podcast.

She continued, “The script supervisor thought I was going with something and then I had to sit down with the writers, and they’d be like, ‘Wait, what happened to the scene?’ And I’d have to go and explain why I couldn’t go do certain things.”

A Chance to Maintain Her Vision of ‘Wednesday’

When it comes to embodying the essence of Wednesday Addams, Ortega hits the mark, taking her claim as Gen Z’s reining ‘Scream Queen’.

Ortega certainly has the watchful eye necessary to not only give justice to the character and series. Her co-star Gwendoline Christie touches briefly upon this in a recent interview.

“She has an inquisitive nature,” Christie says. “It almost feels like a paradox in her character, where she seems to consume life seriously, but she also appreciates all of its absurdity, and she has this unabandoned imagination alongside of it.”

It seems that Ortega, the team, and dedicated fans all await the filming and execution of Season 2 of ‘Wednesday,’ which is set to start in another month, with Oretga now taking the lead to make sure we get the best version of the character the screen has ever seen.
