In 2018, in an interview with InStyle, Jennifer Lopez put her ability to defy the aging process down to her decision to steer clear of caffeine and alcohol, as well as her healthy sleeping habits. “I’ve taken care of myself, and now it shows,” the 53-year-old explained.

And in 2016, speaking to US Weekly, Lopez said: “I don’t drink or smoke or have caffeine. That really wrecks your skin as you get older.”

Because of such comments, the actor and singer came in for criticism on social media in April, after she announced the launch of Delola, her own line of alcoholic cocktails. Lopez was also criticised as her husband, the actor Ben Affleck, has had problems with alcoholism.

Now, she has taken to social media to address the controversy.

“I don’t drink to get shit-faced”

In an Instagram video posted this week, Lopez said: “I know that a lot of people have been talking about, ‘Oh, she doesn’t even drink, what’s she doing with a cocktail out?

“And to tell you the truth, that was true for a long time - I didn’t drink. A few years back, as you will see from several photos of me over the past 10, maybe 15 years, I have been having the occasional cocktail. I do enjoy the occasional cocktail.

I do drink responsibly, I don’t drink to get shit-faced. I drink to be social and have a nice time and just kind of relax and let loose a bit, but always responsibly.

“And I have to tell you, I tried a lot of different things. Cocktails, I was into white Russians at one point, I was into rosé… but I never found anything that I really loved, like, ‘OK, that’s what I love, this what I like to drink when I have a drink.’”

“And so, like anything else in my life, I created it myself. I created Delola. And Delola is really about a healthier way [to drink]. Something that fit my lifestyle to drink, the way that I would drink, the way that Jennifer drinks.”
