Kate Hudson has spoken out about the public scrutiny she faced in the early days of her career. The ‘How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days’ actress explained that when she began experiencing fame, she also began to see the overwhelmingly negative effects of having a public image.

Hudson says that with her rise to fame, there were “so many lies” being circulated about her as the media speculated on her relationships and commented on her body. She says it was difficult as the star didn’t really have a platform like social media to voice her side of the story at the time.

While appearing on the ‘Let’s Talk Off Camera with Kelly Ripa’ podcast, Hudson, 43 recalled, “When I got really famous, there were so many lies. It was so weird because in my mind it felt so unjust like this is unfair.”

Body shaming

“[The media] were so mean to women. I mean, the body-shaming from being too skinny to too fat to then going up your skirt and the cellulite,” she said.

In October 2005, Hudson’s appearance was critiqued by the British edition of the National Enquirer, claiming her as “way too thin” and looking “like skin and bones.” At the time she claimed the allegations were “blatantly false” and ended up winning a subsequent libel damages lawsuit.

Her suspected love life

Hudson, who experienced fame from a young age as she is the daughter of actress Goldie Hawn and musician Bill Hudson, also disclosed that her interactions with men were always being scrutinized by paparazzi.

“I couldn’t speak to a man without being partnered with him,” she said. “I couldn’t sit and say hello to someone.

“There was so much of it at such a rate that I couldn’t in any way comprehend, that I realized I need to figure out how to not care about any of this.”

The ‘Glass Onion’ actress also explained how draining it was to deal with the constant scrutiny, adding: “You just realize that you’re letting them win the more you feel bad. If I’m going to allow this negative energy to get into me, then they win. I’ve given them all my power.”
