Kate Middleton made a trip to Landau Forte College in Derby on Wednesday to personally congratulate solo explorer Captain Preet Chandi, who broke the world record for making the longest unsupported solo polar expedition ever.

The Princess, who was the official patron of the expedition, met the Army Officer at a ceremony at the Derby college following the historic tour. The pair talked to the college students about how to build resilience and well-being in every aspect of life, whatever the challenge might be.

The 41-year-old Princess, wearing a chic white blazer and casual sneakers, greeted the Captain by affectionately calling her “Polar Preet” and giving Chandi a hug before joining in the celebratory event.

The expedition activities

The college hosted an exciting day of speeches and activities related to the expedition, including a tire-pulling contest, which is an exercise Chandi used for her polar training that simulates what it’s like to pull a sled.

The Princess shed her elegant blazer and strapped on the harness to drag the bundle of tires across the floor. “I need to do some training!” Princess Kate said while laughing afterward. Those attending also learned about other training activities for Antarctic exploration, and the different types of food the explorer consumed during the journey.

Why was Princess Kate patron of the expedition?

The Princess supported the expedition because she is inspired by Chandi’s courage and resolve to set out on such an extraordinary mission. Middleton has said that she believes the Captain will inspire the next generation to persevere through challenges in their lives, and that they can become stronger by facing difficult tasks head on.

When Captain Chandi was preparing for the mission last year, Middleton posted her support in an Instagram message. “Proudly supporting @polarpreet’s extraordinary challenge to become the first woman to cross Antarctica solo and unsupported,” the Princess of Wales wrote.
