The Princess of Wales has a history of paying tribute to her in-laws through her clothing and accessories, and she didn’t disappoint at King Charles’ royal coronation at Westminster Abbey. Kate wore an elegant ivory silk gown with a blue and red shamrock that featured gold embellishments to represent the four nations.

Among her accessories, Kate wore pearl and diamond earrings that belonged to the late Princess Diana. Kate has been photographed wearing these earrings on several occasions.

Kate also honors Queen Elizabeth

Kate also paid homage to Queen Elizabeth by wearing a diamond Festoon necklace. The necklace was a gift to Queen Elizabeth by her father, King George, who commissioned the piece in 1950.

Queen Elizabeth wore the necklace often, including during a dinner at the White House with former U.S. president George Bush in 2007.

Charles Spencer on Diana

There were a few faces missing from the coronation crowd, like Charles Spencer, Diana’s brother.

While Spencer tends to stay out of the spotlight, he does attend special royal events like Prince William and Harry’s weddings and Queen Elizabeth’s committal service.

“I think we’ve never had an official role in it, just turned up like everyone used to, when it was the hereditary peers and the House of Lords,” Spencer told the ‘Off Air… with Jane and Fi’ podcast. “That’s no longer the case.

“There is some old coronet knocking around somewhere, but I won’t be wearing it soon, I don’t think.”

Spencer informed the hosts that he won’t be in attendance at the coronation.

“I wouldn’t have thought so,” he said.

Spencer was asked if he’s offended by the fact that many will be thinking of Diana on coronation day, but Spencer took it as a compliment.

“I think that’s very complimentary, actually,” he said. “Obviously I think of Diana every day, in a different context.”
