Katy Perry reveals “huge” mistake declining to work with Billie Eilish
The singer revealed she had an opportunity to work with Billie Eilish, but turned it down
Katy Perry revealed her “huge” regret in turning down the opportunity to collaborate with seven-time Grammy Award-winning singer Billie Eilish on her song ‘Ocean Eyes’.
Perry explained her reason for declining, stating that at the time, she thought the song was “boring.”
The now viral Tik Tok
In a Tik Tok Video posted by 102.7 KIIS FM, the 38-year-old singer told a group of fans at what appeared to be an intimate performance about the possible collaboration.
Perry explained to the audience that she received an email that said: “Hey, check out this new artist. I’d really like us to work with her because she was working with me for Unsub [Records].”
At the time Eilish was not the successful singer she is today, as ‘Ocean Eyes’ was her first viral song. Back in 2017, Eilish told Billboard that “everything came to me at once “because of ‘Ocean Eyes’.”
“It was a song called ‘Ocean Eyes’,’ and it was just a blonde girl, and I was like, ‘Meh, boring’, said Perry.
She then confidently admitted it was a “big mistake, huge mistake” to pass up the offer. She jokingly added: “Don’t let this hit the internet.”
The TikTok now has over 16,800 likes and hundreds of comments and shares. A tweet sharing the video has also gathered over 365,000 views.
The success of ‘Ocean Eyes’
“Ocean Eyes” has become one of Eilish’s most popular songs to date. Eilish and her brother originally uploaded the track to Soundcloud in November of 2015 so that her dance teacher could have access to it, and the song went viral overnight.
The song was later rerecorded for her debut EP ‘Don’t Smile at Me’ released two years after the song went viral. A commercially successful EP, it reached number 14 on the US Billboard Top 200 Chart.
Perry was in the news just earlier this week after sharing that she will be returning to ‘American Idol’ as a judge for another season. The singer posted the announcement on her Instagram account by sharing a Las Vegas themed promotional photo with the caption:
“American Idol has been making dreams come true for 21 years, you think we’re not gonna go BIG?! 🎶 Roll the [dice] with us, the season premiere is Feb. 19 on ABC!”
