Kelly Clarkson opens up about divorce from ex-husband Brandon Blackstock
It’s been almost a year since Clarkson and her ex-husband made the decision that ‘rips you apart’ according to the star.
Kelly Clarkson and Brandon Blackstock got married in December 2012, after 6 years of dating. The couple filed for divorce in 2020, after nearly 7 years of marriage. On a new episode of ‘Angie Martinez’s IRL’ podcast, the Grammy winner and talk show host talks about the split and how it’s affecting her two children, River, 8, and Remi, 6.
After coming from a divorced family of her own, Clarkson understands the difficulties her children are facing and it’s no light burden to bear.
“I just sit there, and I’m like, ‘I get it. I’m from a divorced family as well. I get it. That sucks. But we’re going to work it out. And you are so loved by both of us,’” Clarkson said.
“I think communicating with them and not treating them — not treating them like an adult, because they’re not — but not treating them like a child. They’re not small feelings. Those are huge feelings, and those are huge emotions,” the ‘Stronger’ singer said.
Despite best efforts
The host asks her how her life has shifted since it all happened, diving into how she and her husband gave their best efforts before coming to the decision.
“I think the thing about divorce — especially having it publicized, and people thinking they know the whole thing — the hardest part of that is, like, it wasn’t an overnight decision.”
‘The Voice’ host comments about how she’s open to love in the future but the marriage simply will not be on the radar for the time being.
“I won’t be getting married,” she said. “In my life, I’ve been through a couple of divorces in my own family as a kid. I would love to fall in love. I would love to find someone and fall in love and do that thing, but I have children and that’s why I say that.”
Relationship History
Clarkson and Blackstock were married for almost seven years before splitting in June 2020. The two met at a rehearsal for the Academy of Country Music Awards in May 2006.
Together, Clarkson and Blackstock have two children together. Blackstock is also a father to two children from his previous marriage to Melissa Ashworth.
