Kevin Bacon’s birthday: You won’t believe how old the ‘Footloose’ star turns today
Screen favorite Kevin Bacon, an actor who has apppeared in numerous acclaimed films, celebrates his birthday today, July 8.
Hollywood legend Kevin Bacon says he has no intention of easing up in his career, as the Footloose star celebrates his 67th birthday.
“I’m more driven than ever”
“It’s funny because I feel like a lot of people, obviously, who are my age are happy to stop, slow down or play golf or whatever,” Bacon told a recent interview with People magazine. “I think I’m more, to a fault maybe, I’m just more driven than ever.
“There’s so many things that I still want to do as an actor, as a musician, as a writer. Not as a writer, but a songwriter. As a director, no. I have no plans to slow down.”
A Hollywood icon - but no Oscars recognition
Born on July 8, 1958, Bacon made his screen debut in 1978’s National Lampoon’s Animal House, and has amassed more than 60 feature-film credits over the past four and a a half decades.
Aside from the 1984 musical drama Footloose, which proved to be the Philadelphia native’s breakout role, the actor has appeared in a number of celebrated films, such as 1991’s JFK, 1992’s A Few Good Men, 1995’s Apollo 13 and 2003’s Mystic River.
However, while he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2003, Bacon has never won an Oscar, or even been nominated for one. Indeed, he revealed last year that he has only attended the Academy Awards once - and that was back in 1984.
Bacon has, though, won two Screen Actors Guild awards: one for his performance in Apollo 13, and another for his turn in the 2009 television production Taking Chance. The historical drama also earned him a Golden Globe.
What are Bacon’s latest films and series?
Most recently, Bacon’s TV work has seen him play the lead in Amazon’s action-horror series The Bondsman, and the Netflix black comedy Sirens.
On the big screen, meanwhile, Bacon has just featured opposite his wife of nearly 37 years, Kyra Sedgwick, in Michael J. Weithorn’s The Best You Can.
A picture that had its premiere last month at the Tribeca Film Festival, the romantic comedy is the couple’s first movie appearance together since Cavedweller and The Woodsman, both released in 2004.
Bacon and Sedgwick, who met on the set of PBS’s TV adaptation of the stage play Lemon Sky, have two children together.
Alongside acting credits opposite his wife, Bacon’s professional family ties also extend to his brother, the Emmy-winning composer Michael. The siblings perform together as a long-running musical duo.
“Forosoco” music with brother Michael
Known as The Bacon Brothers, they describe their music as “a mix of folk, rock, soul, and country music” - a sound they call “forosoco”.
Kevin and Michael released their latest record, Ballad of the Brothers, in April, and are preparing for the start of the Freestanding Tour. A run of concerts spanning several U.S. states, the tour kicks off on July 16 in Paw Paw, Michigan.
