ROYAL FAMILY
King Charles reportedly gave a toast to his grandson during coronation lunch
King Charles has only met his grandson Archie on three occasions.
As King Charles III celebrated his coronation, the royal family still finds themselves estranged from Prince Harry, his wife, Meghan Markle, and their two children, Archie and Lilibet.
Of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, only the Duke, Prince Harry, was able to bear witness to his father’s coronation. He quickly rushed back home to California as soon as the ceremony was over, in order to make it back in time to celebrate Archie’s fourth birthday, which fell on the same day as the coronation.
But during the private lunch after the coronation ceremony, the newly crowned King took a moment to remember his grandson.
King Charles wished his grandson a happy birthday
The Daily Mail reported that the King took a moment to thank everyone who made the day such a success and raised a glass to his three grandchildren present: Prince George, whose role in the ceremony was Page of Honour, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis.
The King also raised a glass to toast “those who weren’t there”, wishing his grandson, Archie, who was back home with his mom Meghan Markle in California, a happy fourth birthday “wherever he was”.
A source who was reportedly at the lunch told the Daily Mail that it was a “sweet moment”.
Prince Harry quickly rushed home
Prince Harry’s appearance at yesterday’s coronation is the first time the estranged Prince has reunited with his family since the publication of his memoir ‘Spare’ in January, and after the Netflix documentary, ‘Harry & Meghan’, aired last December.
Harry appeared to be enjoying time speaking with his cousins, Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice, but did not speak with his eldest brother, Prince William, nor his father, the King, as the three men continue to have a strained relationship.
Prince William was reportedly insulted by insinuations made against him by Harry in his memoir, regarding the role William played when the media began their attacks on Meghan, back when Harry and Meghan were still working royals.
And as soon as the ceremony ended, Harry was photographed getting into a car and taken to London’s Heathrow Airport, to catch his flight back home.
A low-key birthday celebration
Meanwhile, Meghan celebrated her son’s birthday with family and close friends at a low-key party in Montecito, California, where the family resides.
Harry reportedly arrived back in Los Angeles at 7:30 p.m. PT, arriving after taking a commercial flight, before making the 90-minute drive to Montecito.
“Meghan wants to be there to support her father-in-law, but at the same time, the scrutiny she receives outweighs the support,” a close friend of Meghan told People.
“There’s always going to be that other side challenging their reasoning, and who wants to put themselves in that position?”
