Update:

An unofficial team of forensic investigators believes Kurt Cobain did not die by suicide in 1994, instead claiming the Nirvana frontman’s death was a homicide following a new review of the singer’s autopsy and crime scene materials.

After Cobain’s body was found at his Seattle apartment on April 5, 1994, the King County Medical Examiner ruled that he died as a result of a self-inflicted Remington Model 11 20-gauge shotgun wound.

Forensic experts challenge official ruling

However, forensic specialists Michelle Wilkins and Brian Burnett have now cast doubt on that conclusion after reexamining the autopsy results.

This is a homicide,” Burnett claimed, according to Wilkins, who spoke to the Daily Mail. “We’ve got to do something about this.”

Their theory suggests foul play, alleging Cobain was forced into a heroin overdose before being shot in the head. The presumed perpetrators, they say, then placed the gun in the musician’s hand, put the receipt for the weapon and shells in his pocket, and forged a suicide note.

Autopsy findings raise new questions

The team believes the autopsy findings align more closely with a heroin overdose than a fatal gunshot wound, citing necrosis of the brain and liver, fluid in the lungs, and hemorrhaging in the eyes.

“There are things in the autopsy that go, well, wait, this person didn’t die very quickly of a gunshot blast,” Wilkins said. “The necrosis of the brain and liver happens in an overdose. It doesn’t happen in a shotgun death.

The forensic team is also skeptical of what they describe as the “very clean” nature of the scene, the positioning of the shotgun and shell casings, and what they say are discrepancies in the handwriting across different lines of the suicide note.

“To me, it looks like someone staged a movie and wanted you to be absolutely certain this was a suicide,” Wilkins added.

Will Cobain’s death be reexamined?

Despite the renewed claims, there appears to be little chance of Cobain’s death being reexamined.

A spokesman for the Seattle Police Department and the King County Medical Examiner’s Office both addressed the report, stating there is “no new evidence to reopen the case” and that “the investigation results remain unchanged.”
