CHAMPIONS LEAGUE FINAL

Lenny Kravitz’s setlist for the 2024 Champions League final opening ceremony at Wembley

It’s been a year of personal landmarks for the Grammy Award winner who is set to warm up the crowd ahead of Real Madrid vs Borussia Dortmund.

What a year it’s turning out to be for Lenny Kravitz. In March, he was inducted into the Hollywood Walk of Fame, joined by his daughter Zoë and actor Denzel Washington as he became the 2,774th recipient of a star on the fabled walkway. And this week saw him turn 60 and release his 12th studio album Blue Electric Light, which he will be promoting by taking his band on the road for a whistlestop, 28-date tour of Europe, taking in Italy, Germany, France, Poland, the Netherlands, Croatia, Denmark, Norway, Hungary and the Czech Republic before a five-night residency in Las Vegas in October.

Big year for Lenny Kravitz

And to cap a memorable week, Kravitz will be in charge of warming up the crowd ahead of Saturday’s Champions League final between Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund - a real treat for those heading to Wembley this weekend. It’s not known whether Lenny is much of a soccer fan, but he is a big fan of American Football. He even wrote a song, Like a Jet, for NFL franchise the New York Jets in 2012.

I wouldn’t say I’m the most sporty person. I follow when I can, when I have time. I grew up in New York City, went to public school in New York, where sports are pretty big among the kids. And I was fortunate enough to live across the street from Joe Namath on 82nd Street - directly looking into his window. I actually got to play catch with him once in front of the building,” he explained at the time.

With his new album Blue Electric Light hitting the shops this week and an extensive back catalogue to choose from, Kravitz will have a tough decision to make when it comes to selecting the songs he will perform at the Pepsi Kick Off Show ahead of Saturday’s Champions League final.

So far, there has been no confirmation of the setlist but whatever is decided, the musician won’t have much time and will have to keep to a tight schedule. The Kick Off Show starts at 2:45 p.m EDT - 15 minutes before the game kicks off at Wembley.

That means he will have about 6-7 minutes on stage - just about enough time to perform one or maybe two songs at the most. The big question is whether to pull out a song from his new album - which the crowd will be unfamiliar with, or give them what they want - one of his well-known classics. He’s spoiled for choice there: It Ain’t Over ‘Till It’s Over, Fly Away, Mr Cab Driver, Let Love Rule, Always On the Run...

Seasoned showman that he is, Lenny will probably want something rocky and energetic, to whip up an atmosphere and get the crowd in the right mood for the final.

The obvious choice is his killer anthem, Are You Gonna Go My Way - it’s uptempo, it has one of the most brilliant riffs ever - and everyone knows it.

He joined H.E.R. to perform a supercharged live rendition of Are You Gonna Go My Way at the 64th GRAMMYs in 2022 and he usually closes his shows with it. Other possible choices include Rock and Roll Is Dead off Circus or the more downtempo Fly Away off 5; while It Ain’t Over ‘Till It’s Over might ring true, or at least have some kind of meaningful message, for never-say-die Real Madrid - and all of the opponents they have beaten when all seemed lost.

As for possible selections from his new album, Blue Electric Light, Kravitz performed Human on Jimmy Fallon’s Tonight Show in March and TK421 in a medley at the People’s Choice Music Icon Awards in Santa Monica a month earlier.

We think the most appropriate cuts off his new release for Wembley are TK421 and Bundle Of Joy. but we will see on Saturday what the singer has lined up for us. We’re sure we won’t be disappointed.
