King Charles’ Coronation will take place on May 6 at the Westminster Abbey church in London, with Lionel Richie pleased to be a part of the festivities.

A list of artists have been invited to perform at the coronation concert in celebration of the new King, and Richie is one of the big names to headline the event.

Richie recently revealed that he’s grateful for the opportunity.

“I mean, you don’t get in the business and say, ‘You know what? I’ll be at the King’s coronation.’ You know, that just never comes up,” Richie told People.

“[It’s] A, a big surprise. B, what an honor. And C, the fact of all the names that are out there that he could have had for this, he called my name.”

Richie is acquainted with Charles

Apparently, Richie has known Charles for a long time.

“I really do celebrate his now stepping into the role,” he continued. “He’s been in that prince role for a long time, but I’m anxious to see what he’s going to now change as far as his reign.

“And so I know him as a wonderful person.”

Who else is performing at the coronation concert?

In addition to Richie, Katy Perry and Andrea Bocelli will also be headlining the event. They will be joined by British pop group Take That, Freya Ridings and Alexis Ffrench.

Who turned down an invite?

There have also been plenty of artists who were invited to perform at the coronation concert, but turned down the opportunity.

According to reports this includes Adele, Ed Sheeran, Elton John, Robbie Willams and the Spice Girls.

Publicist Simon Jones explained that any artist who performs may be subjected to controversy.

“The royal family has faced a number of PR scandals in recent times, and anyone performing at the show would have to consider whether there would be a backlash from appearing amongst their fans,” he said.
