Madonna and actress Julia Garner took selfies together after celebrating photographer Steven Klein’s birthday in New York over the weekend.

Madonna shared pics of the two on her Instagram stories, captioning one of the selfies: “B—- we’re Madonna!”

Garner was hand-picked by Madonna to play the queen of pop herself in the biopic that the ‘Like a Virgin’ singer would also write and direct. The movie was put on hold in January when Madonna announced she would be embarking on her 12th world tour, ‘The Celebration Tour’.

‘Madonna’ biopic put on hold due to ‘The Celebration Tour’

The biopic was originally under development at Universal Studios, before Madonna’s tour announcement put a pause on any further casting decisions, which was also rumored to include Julia Fox as Madonna’s longtime friend, Debi Mazar.

As of January, the biopic had gone through several screenwriters and at least two script overhauls.

Madonna has previously spoken on the length of the script, and the difficulty she faces in accurately showcasing her life without sacrificing any important details.

“I have a very long script that is really hard for me to make shorter. I’ve been whittling away at it, but it’s like hacking off my limbs,” she told Variety in an interview last summer.

The pop icon’s decision to make a movie of her life came largely as a result of her wanting to take ownership of any movies made about her and tell her story in her own words, capturing her “extraordinary life” as only she knows it.

“I’ve had an extraordinary life, I must make an extraordinary film. It was also a preemptive strike because a lot of people were trying to make movies about me. Mostly misogynistic men. So I put my foot in the door and said, ‘No one’s going to tell my story, but me.’

Julia Garner landed the role of a lifetime

Garner reportedly beat out plenty of actresses eager for the role, including Florence Pugh, Alexa Demie, and Sydney Sweeney.

The audition process for the role was reportedly a grueling affair, consisting of 11-hour days, according to sources, and included choreography sessions both with Madonna’s choreographer and Madonna herself. The prospective actresses also had to complete readings and conduct singing auditions.

In March, Garner revealed that despite the biopic being put on hold back in January, she’s still “keeping her fingers crossed” that it will resume production, but has been quiet on the details.
