What is a serious bacterial infection?

The popstar had planned the tour as a 40th anniversary of her breakout single, ‘Holiday’. The 84-date tour was billed as Madonna’s first ever greatest hits tour but the shows will be suspended after the star suffered a serious bacterial infection.

The Mayo Clinic defines bacterial infections as those which are caused by bacteria, the single-celled microorganisms that can live on and in the human body. Most bacteria are harmless, and some are actually vital to our well-being.

However others can cause serious harm and need to be fought off by the human body’s anti-bacterial responses. If that is unsuccessful, antibiotics can be used to kill or prevent the bacteria from multiplying.

Bacteria is microscopic and can be transferred into the body in a variety of ways, such as from contaminated foods, unclean water, dirty surfaces or the bite from an animal or bug. However there are countless other ways that a bacterial infection could occur.

There is no fixed definition for a ‘serious bacterial infection’, but her spell in the ICU suggests that Madonna’s case has been worrying. Fans will be glad to know that the iconic popstar is improving and is expected to make a full recovery.
