Margot Robbie reveals Greta Gerwig’s first choice for role of Barbie

The ‘Barbie’ star reveals that the role was first meant for someone else.

Margot Robbie has revealed that Gal Gadot was originally considered for the role of Barbie in Greta Gerwig’s upcoming film.

Gadot, who starred in ‘Wonder Woman 1984′, has “Barbie energy”, according to Robbie — and was actually Gerwig’s first choice for the leading role.

While Gerwig’s first choice to portray Barbie was Gadot, it was Robbie who was ultimately cast in the iconic role. Robbie stars alongside Ryan Gosling, who plays Ken.

Robbie is also a producer on the film, and she agrees with Gerwig that Gadot was the best choice.

Waiting for Godot?

Appearing in a Vogue interview, Robbie revealed that in the early days of the film’s development, she and Gerwig scouted many contenders for the role — and continued to look to Gadot.

“Gal Gadot is Barbie energy,” Robbie said. “Because Gal Gadot is so impossibly beautiful, but you don’t hate her for being that beautiful, because she’s so genuinely sincere, and she’s so enthusiastically kind, that it’s almost dorky. It’s like right before being a dork.”

The only information given about why Gadot did not take the role is because she couldn’t commit the time to the project and would therefore have to sit it out.

When the project was in consideration back in 2016, it was Amy Schumer originally set to play the role. However, a handful of months later she pulled out, also due to scheduling conflicts.

All the Barbies and Kens

There are actually many different Barbies and many different Kens in the film, as the trailer suggests.

Kingsley Ben-Adir, Scott Evans, Simu Liu, and Ncuti Gatwa all appear as a version of Ken, while Hari Nef, Emma Mackey, Dua Lipa, Anna Cruz Kayne, Sharon Rooney, Kate McKinnon, Nicola Coughlan, Alexandra Shipp, Ritu Arya, and Issa Rae all appear as different Barbies.

The movie is scheduled for theatrical release July 21.
