Martin Scorsese rocks new ‘Gandalf look’ in long-awaited return to acting

The legendary director makes a surprising return to the screen, featuring in Julian Schnabel’s upcoming film, ‘In The Hand of Dante’.

Scorsese has a new film
Update:

Martin Scorsese is one of the most celebrated filmmakers of all time, a true legend behind the camera. But what many fans don’t know is that he’s also stepped in front of it.

Last year, it was announced that Scorsese would join the cast of Julian Schnabel’s new film, In the Hand of Dante. Now, the first image of his character has been released, leaving audiences stunned.

In the photo, Scorsese is nearly unrecognizable, sporting what many have called a “Gandalf look”: a long gray beard and flowing hair that give him the air of a mystical, wise elder. In the film, he plays an old man who becomes a guiding influence on Dante Alighieri as he writes The Divine Comedy.

Scorsese has made cameo appearances in the past, most notably as Van Gogh in Akira Kurosawa’s Dream. But this time, it looks like his role is far more substantial. Schnabel has described his performance as “brilliant and important,” promising that viewers “won’t be able to take their eyes off” him.

In the Hand of Dante weaves together historical and contemporary storylines. The plot follows a manuscript of The Divine Comedy discovered in the Vatican Library, which passes from a priest to a New York mob boss. In the story, Oscar Isaac plays Dante, who regularly visits Scorsese’s character for guidance as he struggles to complete his masterpiece.

The film boasts an impressive ensemble cast, including Gal Gadot, Gerard Butler, Al Pacino and John Malkovich. It is slated for release later this year, with an early screening at the Venice Film Festival. Whether Scorsese’s performance earns critical acclaim remains to be seen, but we’ll find out soon enough.
