Marvel resolves to reduce film output

Marvel’s phase 4 started with ‘Black Widow’ and ended with ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’. It consisted of seven films and seven television series, which were all released within 2020 to 2022.

However, despite dominating the movie scene for over a decade, the MCU’s phase 4 was heavily criticized for being overstuffed and under-developed.

Though phase 5 got off to a rocky start with ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’, film critic Jeff Sneider claimed to have insider knowledge into the MCU’s schedule going forward.

Decreasing film output

According to Sneider, Marvel plans to release three films and two shows per year, rather than four films and four shows.

“Marvel’s target output has been reduced,” Sneider told The Hot Mic podcast. “I don’t know if this has been reported, or if this was a line in the trades, or whatever, but I’m told that the target output has been reduced from four shows and four movies a year to two shows and three movies a year.

“And of course that’s malleable. You could get one on either side of that, or whatever.”

A chance at redemption

While phase 4 was seen as a fall from grace, CEO Kevin Feige previously confirmed that he wants to focus on quality over quantity in the upcoming phases.

“I do think one of the powerful aspects of being at Marvel Studios is having these films and shows hit the zeitgeist,” Feige said. “It is harder to hit the zeitgeist when there so much product out there – and so much ‘content,’ as they say, which is a word I hate.”

What’s next for Marvel?

So far, Marvel seems to be following this new regime with ‘Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 3′ and ‘The Marvels’ slated to release later this year.

In terms of shows, ‘Loki’ season 2 and ‘Secret Invasion’ are both scheduled for later this summer.
