Melanie Martinez to release first single ‘Death’ from upcoming album ‘Portals’ on Friday
‘Death’ is set to become the first single released from the upcoming ‘Portals’ album
After announcing her new album dubbed ‘Portals’ last month, Melanie Martinez has now teased that the album’s first single will be released on Friday, March 17, to the delight of fans.
The single, called ‘Death’ was announced in a cryptic post on Martinez’s Instagram account, with a caption that is presumably the lyrics from the song. The post also featured what appears to be Martinez’s pink alien alter-ego emerging from a prone human form.
A new creative direction for Martinez
Little information about the song other than its imminent release on Friday, and the cryptic caption, which continues the themes found in the other Instagram posts of life, death, and rebirth.
“What is incomprehensible to us as humans, Is home to us as souls, Death is life is death is life is death is life is,” the single announcement post says.
Martinez’s new album is taking a vastly different artistic approach from her previous albums, finding the artist taking a new creative approach that is much more abstract, ethereal, and mystical.
Martinez also portrays a new character, a pink alien-like creature that many fans theorize is a reincarnation of her previous Cry Baby persona from ‘K-12′ (2019) and ‘Cry Baby’ (2015).
When the album was first teased in February, the video snippet teasing the album was set in a mystical forest, with Martinez dressed as the pink alien creature emerging from a giant egg beneath a mushroom tree.
Other clips on her Instagram account revolve around the theme of embryos, her pink creature incubating in utero, and an overall theme of death and rebirth.
“My body has died but I’m still alive. Look over your shoulder, I’m back from the dead,” the song goes.
When will ‘Portals’ be released?
Martinez announced the release of ‘Portals’ on February 22 on her Instagram account. It will be released on Friday, March 31, and is now available for pre-order on Martinez’s website for fans eager to get their hands on a vinyl copy of the album. The vinyls come in a variety of colors and designs to choose from.
It can also be pre-added to either Spotify or Apple Music.
