Michael Douglas, who won an Academy Award for his role in ‘Wall Street’, will be honored at the Cannes Film Festival 2023 with the Palme d’Honneur for his film career.

Douglas will be the guest of honor at the 76th edition of the Cannes Film Festival, which will take place from May 16 to May 27.

“It’s always a breath of fresh air to be at Cannes, for so long a wonderful platform for daring creators, artistic daring and excellence in storytelling,” Douglas said in a statement.

“After more than fifty years in the industry, it is an honor to return to the Croisette to open the festival and embrace the universal language of cinema that we share.”

The tribute to Michael Douglas

The event will kick off with a tribute to Douglas during the opening ceremony, followed by the the screening of the opening film, ‘Jeanne du Barry’, which is a biographical drama directed by and starring Maïwenn alongside Johnny Depp.

The ‘Ant-Man’ star has been in movies since the mid ‘60s. For the first two decades of his career, Douglas had minor roles in movies that never really took off, but by the ‘80s, he began paving a way in Hollywood.

Douglas was featured in ‘After the Green Heart’, ‘Fatal Attraction’, ‘War of the Roses’, and ‘Wall Street’, which won him the Oscar for Best Actor, and onto ‘A Day of Rage’, ‘The Game’, ‘The President and Miss Wade’, ‘Traffic’, and ‘Not a Word’.

The actor’s career hit somewhat of a plateau in the early 2000s, as his movies were perceived as lackluster, such as his 2010 ‘Wall Street’ sequel with Shia LaBeouf.

Then came the era of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and Douglas found a new niche in superhero films. His role as Hank Pym in ‘Ant-Man’, starring alongside Paul Rudd, reignited his career.

The most recent ‘Ant-Man’ sequel, ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’, was released earlier in 2023.
