Miley Cyrus’ hit song ‘Flowers’ topped charts as the most-streamed track for the whole week after its release, breaking Spotify records. The breakup tune is the lead single from the singer’s upcoming album, Endless Summer Vacation. It will be her eighth studio album.

The song was released with an accompanying music video and got over 100 million streams in that period, prompting a congratulatory post from Spotify itself. The company posted about the milestone on Twitter, quipping “she can buy her own flowers and break her own records”.

The star responded on social media: “Thank you so much @Spotify and my amazing fans.”

In the ‘Flowers’ official music video, the 30-year-old singer wears a long gold dress, gaining confidence as she walks. At first she appears to lament the loss of relationship with her partner, but then it becomes clear the song is about self-empowerment.

Cyrus takes a swim, does a workout, and has a shower as she sings about how she can satisfy her own needs without a partner:

“I can buy myself flowers

Write my name in the sand

Talk to myself for hours, yeah

Say things you don’t understand

I can take myself dancing, yeah

I can hold my own hand

Yeah, I can love me better than you can.”

‘Flowers’ the latest in chart-topping breakup songs

Trends in breakup songs like ‘Flowers’ have been on the rise. Cyrus’ song is in competition with SZA’s ‘Kill Bill’ and Taylor Swift’s ‘Anti-Hero’ for the top slot on The Hot 100 list.

Some of the ‘Wrecking Ball’ singer’s fans speculate that her new track is to take a swing at former husband, Liam Hemsworth. The track was released on his birthday, January 13.
