Update:

George Clooney is in a select club of Hollywood A-listers who possess real estate that’s among the priciest owned by any show-business star.

In a recent ranking, the specialist website Essential Home pinpointed Clooney among a trio of Tinseltown favorites whose property portfolio includes homes with an apparent nine-figure value. The 64-year-old is joined by media mogul Oprah Winfrey - a Best Actress Oscar nominee for the 1985 film The Color Purple - and the Star Wars creator George Lucas.

George Clooney: Villa in Laglio, Italy

Per Architectural Digest, Clooney’s luxury Italian villa has 25 rooms, plus amenities such as a swimming pool, a gym and tennis court. The Ocean’s actor bought the mansion, located on Lake Como, for a reported $10 million in 2002. Having undergone extensive renovation work over the years, it is now believed to be worth around $100m, Essential Home says. In recent times, Clooney and his wife, the human-rights lawyer Amal Clooney, have denied reports that they are seeking to sell the property.

Oprah Winfrey - Mansion in Montecito, CA

A mansion described as a “$101 million sanctuary”, Winfrey paid a reported $50m for the sprawling estate in Montecito, California, back in 2001. Featuring a 23,000-square-foot Neo-Georgian main house, the property has “meticulously landscaped grounds, complete with fruit orchards, horse stables, and an equestrian ring”, Essentially Home notes. The New York Post’s Mary Jacob adds that the mansion includes six bedrooms, 14 bathrooms, a library and a theater.

George Lucas - Skywalker Ranch in Nicasio, CA

Named after the iconic Star Wars character, Lucas’s Skywalker Ranch revolves around a main residence built in the Victorian style in 1985 - but the $100m estate has so much more besides. According to a description by Lucasfilm, the 15-acre Californian property also includes a farm, a vineyard, an olive tree grove, Lake Ewok - another Star Wars nod - and a 153,000-square-foot ‘technical building’ equipped with movie-making studios and a 300-seat theater.

Special mention also goes to…

Also prominent in Essentially Home’s ranking is Chateau Miraval - an $80m French mansion owned by former spouses Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. Situated in Correns, in the south of the European country, the property reportedly remains at the center of a legal tug-of-war between Pitt and Jolie, even though the actors finalized their divorce early this year.

Meanwhile, Ted actor Mark Wahlberg also possesses a mansion that comes close to the $100m mark. Valued at $87.5m, Wahlberg’s enormous property in Beverly Hills, California, “features 12 bedrooms, 20 bathrooms, a pool, a full-size sports court, and a lavish poolside cabana”, Essentially Homes notes.

Beyoncé and Jay-Z: California history-makers

Of all the properties owned by stars from across the entertainment industry, notes the real-estate website Home & Texture, it is music icons Beyoncé and Jay-Z who appear to have the priciest mansion.

Indeed, the power couple made the most expensive house purchase in California history when they paid $200m for an eight-acre property in Malibu in 2023, reveals Forbes magazine’s Emme Reynolds. In addition to a 30,000-square-foot modernist-style glass and concrete house, the property also includes a large infinity pool and a private beach. The mansion was originally listed for $295 million, Reynolds says.

What’s the most expensive house purchase ever?

That initial asking price is just short of what is understood to be the highest fee paid in the last decade - and potentially in history - for a residential property. Per Mansion Global, that status belongs to a 14,000-square-foot home in Deep Water Bay, Hong Kong, which was bought for $322m by the billionaire businessman Pan Sutong in 2017.
