Netflix plans to stop password sharing revealed
The streaming giant’s new password-sharing rules include a minimum watch time and location-based usage permissions.
Netflix recently announced it would be cracking down on password sharing as early as spring, but more fine print of the new terms has come to light. The multi-billion dollar company will soon limit access to its streaming services based on the user’s Wi-Fi network, location, and device.
Netflix will use location and Wi-Fi data to limit devices connected to the platform, while at the same time, the streaming giant has added rules including a minimum viewing time of at least once every 31 days.
According to MSN News, should users attempt to not follow these guidelines — which were put in place to keep it from missing out on revenue from the reported 100 million people using the service free of charge — Netflix reserves the right to block the device from its streaming services.
How Netflix will verify your account
Your Netflix account will only be accessible to people in the same location as you. The “Primary household” to which your account will be registered will be verified by Netflix to ensure that all users on the account are at the same address and using the same wifi connection.
To keep your account verified, Netflix will require you to watch its streaming services from your verified device at your designated location at least once a month. If you move to a new home, you must register your new details with Netflix.
Can I still watch Netflix when I travel?
As long as you aren’t away for more than 31 days, Netflix says you should be able to access the platform from your verified device. The company advises that you “use your chosen device to watch the service over your home wi-fi before you leave,” in case your 31 days runs out while you are away.
If you still can’t get on Netflix while traveling, Netflix will give you the opportunity to use a code that you can use on your verified device for seven consecutive days. If your trip is longer than that, you will have to wait until you get home to view Netflix again.
Will Netflix know if users share passwords?
The Netflix streaming service will be programmed to use “IP addresses, device IDs, and account activity” to verify that the account is being used at the approved location. As the company already has all your information, your viewing history can be transferred to a new account if you have been previously sharing with someone else.
If you do want to pay to share your password, you’ll have the option to add one or two other people to your account, depending on which Netflix subscription you have. At that time you’ll enter the personal details of the other person and they’ll receive the invitation. The other person must be in the same country as the account holder.
Further restrictions will include limitations on the extra person’s viewing. They can only view and download Netflix videos on one verified device at a time.
The streaming company first announced its new user rules in a statement last week.
