Everything you need to know about the 2024 Oscars

The red carpet will showcase a parade of stars, many of whom are nominees at this special evening. It’s a night filled with high anticipation, especially for the Best Leading Actress Oscar—a category ripe for surprises, as this is Hollywood, after all. The following actresses have been nominated:

Emma Stone for ‘Poor Things’

Emma Stone is the favorite to take home the award. Her performance in Giórgos Lánthimos’ ‘Poor Things’ has garnered her widespread acclaim, winning her the Golden Globe and the BAFTA. She brings to life the character of Bella Baxter, navigating between fun and madness, showcasing a complex character evolution through her exceptional acting skills. This role could earn her the second Oscar of her career, and her second for Best Actress, after her 2016 win for ‘La La Land’. She has also been nominated for Best Supporting Actress in 2014 and 2018.

Lily Gladstone for ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’

Lily Gladstone, initially under the radar for this nomination, has been touted by several film-focused websites as a strong contender for the Oscar. Her role in ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ proved to be outstanding, working alongside Martin Scorsese, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Robert De Niro, and delivering a compelling portrayal of Mollie in a tale of violence, overshadowing the character of Ernest Burkhart (DiCaprio).

This marks the actress’s first Oscar nomination, although she has always been highly praised for her performances in films like ‘Certain Women’.

Carey Mulligan for ‘Maestro’

Carey Mulligan is up for Best Actress for her remarkable portrayal in ‘Maestro’, where she plays Felicia Montealegre, an actress who was married to Leonard Bernstein (Bradley Cooper), left him for a relationship with Tom Cothran, and later reunited with Bernstein after being diagnosed with lung cancer.

This nomination is the third in her career, following nods in 2009 for ‘An Education’ and in 2020 for ‘Promising Young Woman’.

Sandra Hüller for ‘Anatomy of a Fall’

Sandra Hüller is another name on everyone’s lips in the film industry this past year. The French film ‘Anatomy of a Fall’ has already received acclaim, winning the Palme d’Or for Best Film at the Cannes Film Festival. On March 10, Hüller aims to win her Oscar for her role in the movie, where she plays a writer arrested and accused of murdering her husband.

The German actress has never received an Oscar nomination but has won other awards, such as the Silver Bear for Best Actress for her role in ‘Requiem’ in 2006. Notably, she also features in another Oscar-nominated film this year, ‘The Zone of Interest’, though without picking up a nomination.

Annette Bening for ‘Nyad’

Annette Bening rounds out the list of nominees for Best Actress with her role in ‘Nyad’, portraying swimmer Diana Nyad who, at 60, sets out to fulfill a dream of swimming 180 km from Cuba to Florida. This is her fifth Oscar nomination, and she hopes it will be the one that finally earns her the coveted award.
