Pedro Pascal took on the role of a grown-up Mario in Saturday Night Live’s Mario Kart spoof trailer.

Inspired by the modern and dark take that HBO has taken on their hit series ‘The Last of Us’ which features Pascal and is based on the beloved video game, the creators at SNL decided to cast the actor in another modern interpretation of a hit video gameMario Kart.

The three minute trailer shows the world of Mushroom Kingdom 10 years after its demise, the only thing the citizens have left in their town is hope.

In an attempt to get important cargo to Rainbow Road, a townsperson approaches Pascal asking for his name and his help.

Pascal turns around fully dressed in a red hat and shirt as well as overalls and introduces himself with the iconic line “It’s a-me, Mario.”

With hopes to save humanity Pascal’s Mario takes on the job of driving Princess Peach to Rainbow Road so she can restore balance and finally defeat Bowser.

Old characters return to the screen

But like any good mission the duo needs as much help as they can get, recruiting old friends and iconic characters such as Luigi, Toad and Yoshi.

The spoof trailer gives fans a look at high speed races, the death of a major character, face offs between enemies such as Goombas, Piranha Plants, red shells, and more.

Between the fake reviews from Variety saying “HBO picked the wrong game to do this with.” to The New York Times writing “Yeah…this ain’t it.” This spoof trailer is full of laughs and easter eggs that everyone can enjoy.

What is ‘The Last of Us’ about

Based on the popular video game, ‘The Last of Us’ takes place 20 years after a modern civilization has been destroyed. Joel (played by Pascal), a hardened survivor, is hired to smuggle Ellie (Bella Ramsey), a 14-year-old girl, out of an oppressive quarantine zone. What starts as a small job soon becomes a brutal, heartbreaking journey, as they both must traverse the U.S. and depend on each other for survival.

Where to watch The Last of Us

‘The Last of Us’ can be watched every Sunday exclusively on HBO and HBO Max. The first season will have nine episodes and feature the likes of Nico Parker, John Hannah, Merle Dandridge, Josh Bremer, Anna Tov, Gabriel Luna and more.
