‘Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio’ has won the 2023 Best Animated Feature FilmOscar award.

The film beat out the likes of ‘Marcel the Shell with Shoes On’, ‘Puss in Boots: The Last Wish’, ‘The Sea Beast’ and ‘Turning Red’.

Having dominated the awards circuit with wins at the Annies, ACE and PGA Awards, the film’s win at Sunday’s Academy Awards was expected by many.

The win means that Guillermo del Toro is now the first person, and Latino, to have won Oscars for Best Picture, Director and Animation. It also means that Netflix is the first streaming platform to win this category.

‘Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio’ is a reimagining of the story of Pinocchio set during Fascist Italy during the interwar period and World War II.

Initially announced in 2008, the aim was to release the film in 2013 or 2014. However, after falling into development hell, the film was revived and acquired by Netflix in 2018.
