Robert Carradine has passed away at the age of 71, his family announced in a statement. Best known to many fans as Sam McGuire, Lizzie’s dad on “Lizzie McGuire”, Carradine built a long career that extended far beyond the beloved Disney Channel series. He also appeared in films such as “Django Unchained”, “The Long Riders”, and “Revenge of the Nerds”.

Born in Los Angeles on March 24, 1954, Carradine was part of a well-known acting family. According to his brother, Keith Carradine, he had been living with bipolar disorder for the past two decades and ultimately died by suicide.

Hilary Duff, who played his on-screen daughter in “Lizzie McGuire”, shared an emotional tribute following the news. “This one hurts,” she wrote. “It’s really hard to face this reality about an old friend. There was so much warmth in the McGuire family and I always felt so cared for by my on-screen parents. I’ll be forever grateful for that. I’m deeply sad to learn Bobby was suffering. My heart aches for him, his family, and everyone who loved him.”

A two-decade battle with Bipolar Disorder

In their statement, Carradine’s family expressed both their grief and their desire to speak openly about his struggle:

“It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of our beloved father, grandfather, uncle, and brother, Robert Carradine. In a world that can sometimes feel very dark, Bobby was always a light to those around him. We are devastated by the loss of this precious soul. We also want to acknowledge Bobby’s brave battle with bipolar disorder over nearly two decades. We hope his story helps shed light on mental illness and encourages open conversations to reduce the stigma surrounding it. At this time, we ask for privacy as we grieve this immeasurable loss.”

Keith Carradine spoke candidly about his brother’s illness, emphasizing that there is no shame in mental health struggles.

“We want people to know there’s nothing to be ashamed of,” he said. “This is an illness that took the best from him. I want to celebrate his fight and the beautiful person he was. He was incredibly talented, and we’ll miss him every day. We’ll find comfort in remembering how funny and wise he could be.” He also highlighted his brother’s kindness and open-minded spirit.
