Hollywood legend Robert Redford has died at the age of 89.

The Oscar winner’s death was confirmed today by the publicity firm Rogers & Cowan PMK, in a statement shared with media outlets.

“He will be missed greatly”

“Robert Redford passed away on September 16, 2025, at his home at Sundance in the mountains of Utah, the place he loved, surrounded by those he loved,” Cindi Berger of Rogers & Cowan PMK said, per Deadline.

He will be missed greatly. The family requests privacy.”

According to the New York Times’ Brooks Barnes, Berger also revealed that Redford died in his sleep “but did not provide a specific cause”.

Academy Award-winning filmmaker

A cinema icon who enjoyed a screen career that lasted for over six decades, Redford won the Best Director Oscar for Ordinary People in 1981.

The California native also accrued three further Academy Award nominations, including Best Actor for the 1973 movie The Sting.

Aside from Ordinary People and The Sting, Redford is best known for films such as 1969’s Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, 1972’s The Candidate and 1976’s All the President’s Men.

Honored for “extraordinary” film career

In 2002, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences presented Redford with its Honorary Award, an accolade handed out for “extraordinary lifetime achievement” in the film industry.

Redford is survived by his second wife, Sibylle Szaggars, and two children - daughters Shauna and Amy - who he shares with his former spouse, Lola Van Wagenen.

He and Van Wagenen also had two further children: James, who died of cancer in 2020, and Scott, who passed away at two months old in 1959, due to sudden infant death syndrome. Per People, Redford had seven granchildren.

Redford married Szaggars in 2009. He and Van Wagenen divorced in 1985, after 27 years of marriage.
