Russell Crowe, actor: “I know the difference between right and wrong, I know what I feel comfortable with”

The star of films like ‘Gladiator’, ‘Robin Hood’ and ‘L.A. Confidential’ knows very well how to manage his own career in Hollywood.

Russell Crowe is widely regarded as one of Hollywood’s most accomplished actors of the past few decades. No surprise there: he’s headlined major films such as L.A. Confidential, Gladiator, A Beautiful Mind, Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, American Gangster, Robin Hood, and the more recent Nuremberg, among many others.

Crowe’s performance in Ridley Scott’s 2000 epic Gladiator earned him the Academy Award for Best Actor. Beyond his talent, Crowe is known for his professionalism and his clarity about how to steer his own career - guided by lessons he learned from his parents, which he now applies to himself and to his children.

Russell Crowe has a clear sense of purpose

He spoke about this in an interview with The Talks. “I am not sure if the darker aspects of humanity are instructive to us. And if the education of our kids is not our number one priority, then we don’t go forward in a positive way,” the actor said. For Crowe, the values instilled by his parents became the foundation for both his personal life and his professional path.

“Some people grow up where they possibly idealize their parents a little bit too much and when they are shown to be human, this whole thing drops out underneath of them,” the 61-year-old said. “With my kids, I have always tried to be as real as possible. I’m going to be who I am. I have a moral standard of my own. I know the difference between right and wrong, I know what I feel comfortable with. And if you live up to your own moral standard, you’re going to have a more comfortable life. If you try and live up to somebody else’s and live on behalf of somebody else, that’s the place that I’m not comfortable with as a person. And if I were to be that person I wouldn’t be giving my children any extra benefit by living inside that deception,” Crowe continued, emphasizing that his decisions have always been his own.

Crowe has certainly never been one to bite his tongue. He has openly criticized those who use their fame or privileged position to try to sway public opinion, insisting that celebrities should contribute to society without seeking personal or professional gain. On another front, Crowe has also acknowledged that his many action-heavy roles have taken a real physical toll. He revealed that he has needed “injections into my shoulders [and] my knees,” as well as IV treatments that have “calmed down my body’s inflammation”.
