Sam Smith cancels Manchester gig after performing four songs
Sam Smith later canceled shows in Glasgow and Birmingham, citing a vocal cord injury.
Sam Smith ended their Manchester show prematurely, after previously teasing that they would be revealing their new Madonna collab, saying “we’ve got a surprise for you this evening… ‘Unholy’ won’t be the last song.”
After four songs, Smith left the stage, only to announce that the show had to be canceled after citing issues with their voice.
Vocal cord injuries cause multiple canceled shows
Smith later issued a formal apology on social media.
“I noticed something wrong with my voice,” they began in their statement. “I prayed it was just my voice waking up for the show but into the fourth song I could feel something was really wrong.
“I came off stage and have tried everything to get my voice back in gear but it won’t. I am honestly heartbroken I couldn’t finish the show tonight for you all. I love you all. I’m sorry I’m sorry I’m sorry x.”
Smith was able to perform ‘Stay With Me’, ‘I’m Not the Only One’, ‘Like I Can’, before exiting right after ‘Too Good at Goodbyes’.
Shortly after, Smith issued another statement on their Instagram stories, saying their already rescheduled Glasgow and Birmingham shows had to be canceled once again. A doctor had informed Smith that they needed to rest their voice after suffering a vocal cord injury.
“Due to vocal issues during last night’s Manchester performance, regrettably we will be canceling the rescheduled Birmingham and Glasgow Sam Smith shows,” the statement said.
“Sam is heartbroken to have had to cancel these shows but they have been told by doctors that if they keep singing, they will do permanent damage to their voice.”
Smith’s next scheduled show will be in Warsaw, Poland, on June 3.
Fans left disappointed
According to the Manchester Evening News, some fans were absolutely gutted that Smith canceled their show after only four songs.
“Sam came out and everyone was screaming and getting into it. They dedicated their show to Tina Turner and told us they had a surprise for us,” one fan told the news outlet.
“Little did we know the surprise was them not coming back on stage. First it was an issue which would be sorted in two minutes, then about 25 minutes later we were told to go home. What a let down.”
“Someone came on and said they were sorry but they have had to cancel the show due to vocal issues. Some people had booked hotels and everything it’s a joke,” another fan said.
